--------------------------------------------------------------- Republicans seek to install partisan conspiracy theorists in state offices before the 2024 election We really have to better communicate to everybody out there just how important these elections are. You canât sit out in 2022, because then your vote is likely not to matter in 2024. This week, the Michigan Republican party formally endorsed a pair of Trump-backed candidates for state offices who routinely echo the former presidentâs false claims that the 2020 election was stolen. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel joined MSNBCâs Ayman Mohyeldin about the danger these figures pose to both her state and Americaâs national election integrity. So far-total silence on their end, despite their routine efforts to intervene in my lawsuits. Perhaps even the Republicans see this law is unconstitutional and indefensible. Oxford families want transparency and school board members have an obligation to provide it. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel again has offered to investigate the deadly Nov. 30 shooting at Oxford High School. After hearing from residents during a community forum on Monday, Nessel sent a letter to the Oxford Community Schools Board of Education offering her department's services to investigate the shooting fully. âThough there were a wide array of opinions expressed, the overwhelming concern shared by all in attendance was a deep desire to learn more about what happened," Nessel wrote in her letter to the board. She pointed out that Michigan law places the "awesome authority" of ensuring the safety and welfare of all students with school boards. Nessel previously offered to investigate in early December, days after the shooting. But the school board declined and decided to move forward with their own third-party investigation. Oxford school administrators have come under fire for talking with the 15-year-old suspect hours before the shooting but allowing him back into class -- likely with a handgun in his backpack. This agreement is a symbol of what we can achieve when stakeholders work together to create positive change. Attorney General Dana Nessel and Consumers Energy have reached a settlement agreement that will see Consumers ending its use of coal in Michigan in 2025. The proposed settlement is still subject to final approval by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). Once approved, Consumers will end its use of coal 15 years earlier than originally planned. According to Consumers, it will be one of the first utilities in the country to end its use of coal. In addition, the settlement provides for the building of nearly 8,000 additional megawatts of solar energy by 2040. Consumers plans to generate 90% of its electricity using clean energy resources by 2040. Today, President Biden and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco will deliver remarks in the Rose Garden to announce additional steps the Administration is taking to combat gun crime. Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined a multistate coalition looking to tackle PFAS pollution. In a letter addressed to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the coalition urges the agency to financially support the initiatives in its PFAS roadmap, including several regulatory and research projects they're hoping will help reduce harmful PFAS exposures. The letter was from the attorneys general of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, Iowa, Michigan, Maine, Rhodes Island, Minnesota, Connecticut, Oregon, Delaware, New Mexico, Delaware, Wisconsin and Hawaii. PFAS are man-made chemicals that are used in a lot of everyday products like non-stick cookware, makeup, and paper packaging like microwave popcorn bags. It's found in water, air, fish, and soil across the world and u.s and may be linked to harmful health effects for humans and animals. Michigan and other states are already putting some of the PFAS roadmaps priorities into place like putting PFAS limits for drinking water and groundwater. Congrats to her and to our team of exceptional attorneys at the Michigan Department of Attorney General. Last year, Michigan Solicitor General Fadwa Hammoud made history as the first Arab-American Muslim woman to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court. Today, the Attorney Generalâs office announced that Hammoud won her case in a 6-3 opinion by the Justices in favor of the State of Michigan. The case centers on Brown v. Davenport, a 2007 case in which Ervine Davenport was convicted of murder in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court. Hammoud went before SCOTUS to argue on behalf of the state last October. Hammoud said in a statement today that the opinion from SCOTUS is not only a personal and professional achievement for her, but that itâs âthe proper decision under the law.â âTodayâs Supreme Court decision ensures that state court decisions that determine an error at trial was harmless beyond a reasonable doubt are given the deference and respect they are due â not just in Michigan, but across the country,â Hammoud said in a statement. âI remain deeply honored that the State and the Attorney General entrusted me with this argument, and I am humbled by the Justicesâ decision." Enbridge: AG Nessel is continuing her fight to shut down the Line 5 oil pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac that pose a grave threat to Michiganâs environment and economy. This includes moving to get her lawsuit, Nessel v. Enbridge Energy, back to state court where it belongs, and to dismiss Enbridgeâs lawsuit challenging Governor Whitmerâs revocation and termination of the 1953 Easement that Enbridge depends on. PFAS (Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances): AG Nessel continues to be a leader in actions filed to hold PFAS manufacturers and polluters accountable for PFAS contamination. Nessel was one of the first attorneys general to bring legal action against 3M, DuPont and other manufacturers of PFAS. Another case, Nessel v. Asahi Plastics North America, is pending in Livingston County Circuit Court. It will be the first PFAS trial in the state. The office has also joined forces with other attorneys general in pressing on PFAS issues at the federal level, most recently urging the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to use current-year funding to fully support initiatives identified in EPA's "PFAS Roadmapâ. Arbor Hills Landfill Settlement: Following more than a year of negotiations, AG Nessel and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) Director Liesl Clark announced a successful settlement agreement with the owner and operator of the Arbor Hills Landfill in Salem Township. The settlement includes environmentally beneficial projects and fines that amount to more than $2.3 million. Other key components of the agreement are a network of monitors along the landfill perimeter to detect hydrogen sulfide and methane emissions before they reach neighboring subdivisions and reduce emissions to below concentrations that might create a nuisance, as well as constructing and operating a facility to collect household hazardous waste so it is not disposed in a landfill. Multistate actions to protect water resources, fight greenhouse gas emissions and promote energy efficiency: Participating in the ongoing Waters of the United States litigation to ensure that federal rules broadly protect lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands; Joining comments and litigation to limit greenhouse gas emissions, including most recently, a motion to intervene in defending federal greenhouse gas emissions for light duty vehicles; Remaining active in ongoing litigation and comments opposing the Trump administrationsâ rollback of energy efficiency standards, and supporting President Bidenâs efforts to reinstate them.
