--------------------------------------------------------------- Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel visits UMich, talks political engagement with students It's critical for young people to become politically active. You can’t just let the generation before you make those decisions. You have to make those decisions for yourself, and that means getting involved politically and getting your voice heard. Photo Courtesy of Jeremy Weine, Michigan Daily Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a 1990 University of Michigan alum, visited East Quadrangle Residence Hall on Saturday at an event organized by FlipBlue to discuss the importance of being politically active, answer students’ questions and encourage young people to vote to let their voices be heard. This year, FlipBlue is putting together a speaker series called “District Dialogue,” which intends to bring in every elected official representing members of the campus community to speak to interested students in Ann Arbor and answer their questions. The discussion took place in the format of a Q&A so students had the opportunity to ask Nessel questions. Students across all grade levels came and asked questions, many of which centered around sexual assault. As elected officials, we have a responsibility to oppose these laws and others like them. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined a coalition of 20 attorneys general in filing a brief supporting a constitutional challenge to several Indiana laws that impose restrictions on abortion providers. According to a release, Indiana’s laws impose restrictions on abortion providers that are not imposed on other health care providers. These laws include a requirement that only physicians can perform first-trimester medication abortions; a requirement that second-trimester abortions be performed in a hospital or ambulatory surgical center; a ban on telemedicine to prescribe abortion-related medications and more. The coalition argues that by limiting access to abortion, Indian’s laws force women to travel to seek care, thus increasing costs and making it more difficult to obtain important health care services. Dana Nessel Joins Efforts To Stop Robocallers From Misusing Phone Numbers Illegal robocalls continue to be a public nuisance for people across this nation and I am proud to join my colleagues in supporting the FCC’s efforts. It’s imperative that we do all that we can to protect consumers from these bad actors. On Tuesday, Attorney General Dana Nessel joined a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general to show support for the Federal Communication Commission’s efforts to reduce illegal robocallers’ access to legitimate phone numbers. Robocallers are now successfully evading caller I.D. authentication by purchasing access to legitimate phone numbers to conceal their identities, and typically do this by providing false identifying information to the companies that have access to legitimate phone numbers. “Illegal robocalls continue to be a public nuisance for people across this nation and I am proud to join my colleagues in supporting the FCC’s efforts,” Attorney General Nessel said. “It’s imperative that we do all that we can to protect consumers from these bad actors.” [READ MORE]( 9 and 10 News Staff, WWTV (16 Nov. 2021) A.G. But our efforts here in Michigan will be strengthened by congressional action to regulate these harmful chemicals and fund needed research and study of their effects. Attorney General Dana Nessel is calling for expedited efforts from the U.S. Senate’s Environment and Public Works to strengthen federal health policies on PFAS. Nessel and 18 other attorneys general drafted a letter stressing the impacts of PFAS and the congressional response needed to mitigate health risks, according to the Michigan attorney general’s office. As recent congressional testimony has shown, Meta’s own internal data makes clear the negative impact social media has, especially on our youth, while they profit. Photo courtesy of Max Ortiz, Detroit News Michigan Attorney General (AG) Dana Nessel says she has long been concerned about the negative impacts of social media platforms on Michigan’s youngest residents. Recently, research has displayed and backed up these concerns, showcasing the negative results with physical and mental health harms, Nessel says. The investigation is looking in depth at the techniques used by Meta to increase the frequency and duration of engagement by young users. It is also looking at the negative impacts these techniques have had resulting in harms caused by such extended engagement. Meta’s own research displays that using and being on Instagram is linked with an increased risk of physical and mental health harms on young people. These risks that are associated include: depression, eating disorders and even suicide.
