Jeanie discovered the Notre Dame School of Dallas during a morning walk shortly after she and her husband moved into a nearby townhouse. Buzzing with students with developmental disabilities — many of them born with Down syndrome — this campus operates in a parallel reality from the city that grew up around it. Young people who once couldn’t walk out of the building without a meltdown now know how to get into a van and put on a seatbelt. Kids who would sit down in the midst of an activity and refuse to get up now participate in grocery store scavenger hunts. Teens who would not make eye contact now shake a newcomer’s hand when introduced and try hard to say their own names.
