If it were up to the Salvadoran government, that would be the end of the story: a president who took bold measures, banished the gangs and was rewarded with approval ratings of 90%. But reality is a lot messier and a lot uglier. Bukele’s anti-gang strategy has eroded the civil rights and democratic rule that Salvadorans long fought for, at great cost over a long and painful history.
