[Masking on planes pits Southwest Airlines flight attendants against pilots](
The union representing Southwest Airlines flight attendants says the company is refusing to enforce mask mandates with pilots, on and off airplanes.
Transport Workers Union Local 556, which represents 15,400 flight attendants, said Friday that many of the carrierâs pilots are not only going maskless in the cockpit as allowed by Federal Aviation Administration rules but theyâve also dropped face coverings during on-ground training. [Omicronâs strain on health systems goes beyond just the number of hospitalizations](
North Texas is concluding yet another week of surging COVID-19 cases that are threatening to overwhelm the areaâs understaffed hospital systems.
[The total hospital occupancy in North Texas during the last month increased from 92% to 93%]( said Steve Love, president and CEO of the DFW Hospital Council. Looking at that metric alone, however, doesnât paint a complete picture of the strains hospitals are currently under, he said. The critical difference between what hospitals are dealing with now compared to before the omicron-variant surge is the increasing percentage of patients positive for COVID-19 â and the number of available staff members to take care of them, he said. [George Mason, influential Dallas faith leader known as a bridge-builder, decides to retire](
After serving Wilshire Baptist Church for almost 33 years, the Rev. George Mason announced Thursday that he plans to retire later this year. Known as a bridge-builder who sought to heal divisions and bring people together for the common good, Mason is the longest serving pastor in the churchâs 70-year history.
In 2016, Masonâs vote to affirm LGBT members of the church resulted in Wilshireâs split with the Baptist General Convention of Texas despite the churchâs 65-year history with the organization. In 2000, under his leadership the church also split with the Southern Baptist Convention. As a result, [Mason helped found a group of more moderate and inclusive churches]( known as the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. During Masonâs tenure he began the ordination of women and divorced people as deacons and offering full church membership to people who were baptized in other Christian traditions. ADVERTISEMENT
