âChoose courageâ: Inside Childrenâs Dallas PICU, where kids with COVID and RSV are filling beds
The new delta variant â combined with a spike in cases of other, common respiratory viruses like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) â [is stretching staff and bed space in the pediatric intensive care unit at Childrenâs Medical Center to its limit](. On Saturday, Childrenâs had 33 patients admitted for COVID-19 and 37 patients admitted for RSV. In May, only 1% of patients at Childrenâs tested positive for COVID-19. Now thatâs up to 10%.
"Weâre tired. Weâre worried. Weâre stressed," said Dr. Cindy Darnell Bowens, medical director of the Childrenâs Dallas PICU who is also a UT Southwestern associate professor. "This is what we do. [4 things to know about northwest Dallasâ notorious Han Gil hotel](
Jonathan Pitts, the 36-year-old murder suspect granted personal-recognizance bond this week because Dallas officials may have lost evidence in his case, is accused of fatally shooting Shun Handy at the Han Gil Hotel Town in northwest Dallas in 2019. Pittsâ case is the first one known to possibly be affected by the data loss. The slaying of Handy is hardly the only transgression that occurred at the Han Gil, a place a federal judge once called a "hotel of horrors." The building â which opened in 1965 as nursing home and sat only 1,000 feet or so from an elementary school â was long known as a hot spot for drug dealers, and authorities say it was the site of overdoses, sexual abuse, beatings and torture. [Adrian Beltre and Chuck Morgan made their special Rangers HOF night about others, not themselves](
Former Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre and Rangers vice president and public address announcer Chuck Morgan [embraced and congratulated one another on being inducted into the Texas Rangers Baseball Hall of Fame]( at Globe Life Field in Arlington. Rangers beat writer Evan Grant writes: Morgan, who was introduced by CFO Kellie Fischer whom heâs worked alongside since 1999, had been nervous about the speech because, well, he saw his enshrinement in the hall as recognizing the fansâ voice. He has been their advocate since arriving for the 1983 season. Heâs called 3,059 consecutive home games, spending one season in 2002 with Kansas City. During the speech, he called out the names of former Rangers Steve Buechele, Nelson Cruz and Shin-Soo Choo. As heâd explained earlier in the week, those have been especially enjoyable over the years because the fans often joined him in drawing out the long "oooh."
"The way they responded to me is probably the highest compliment a guy like me could receive," Morgan had said. "Better than payday."
On Saturday, he said: "I wanted to thank everybody and not leave anybody out. But I worry most about the fan experience. I wanted them to like what I did." Beltreâs speech was shorter. A taped video interview with former teammate Elvis Andrus, who had to leave before Saturdayâs game to be present for the birth of his third child, may have lasted longer than Beltreâs five-minute speech. Which also was appropriate. Beltre has never been one to talk much about himself. AROUND THE SITE

[Tesla may have a new ally in wresting control of car sales from Texas dealerships](
Texas is eager to build electric vehicles, but will it work with emerging manufacturers that donât want to sell through the stateâs storied dealership industry? Electric vehicle startup Rivian Automotive was pushing lawmakers to let it be its own dealership before it was known that the manufacturer was considering building a $5 billion plant in Dallas-Fort Worth. In the first six months of this year, Rivian spent up to $300,000 to employ four lobbyists for this yearâs legislative session, according to lobbyist registration information filed with the Texas Ethics Commission.
