Thank you for helping us cover so much more than the city of Dallas. Â Â When COVID-19 arrived in

Thank you for helping us cover so much more than the city of Dallas.   [BECOME A MEMBER]( When COVID-19 arrived in North Texas in March 2020, I knew it would drastically change the course of a new Dallas Morning News initiative, DMN Local, that I was working to get off the ground. After 14 years at The News, most recently as assistant politics editor, I had become editor of DMN Local only three months before. I sought to increase our coverage of North Texas communities, publishing more stories that help readers know what’s going on close to home — things to do, restaurants to enjoy, new stores to shop in. The pandemic rendered many of these topics obsolete, while the need for local news on COVID-19 and other topics exploded. Could our scrappy team rise to the challenge of covering the biggest story of the year? I’m proud to say we did, delivering hyperlocal news coverage from DeSoto to Allen, about the effects of the coronavirus on city services, schools and businesses. We also told stories about the toll it took on communities and the resilience of their residents, who [donated PPE to hospitals]( [gave away free meals]( [sent letters to their students]( [started a trail of painted rocks]( and more. It’s no secret that cutbacks in journalism have made it harder for The Dallas Morning News to cover communities like it once did, and we heard from readers who missed the news that matters to them. DMN Local created a framework to expand that coverage in 10 communities (Allen, Arlington, DeSoto, Frisco, Irving, McKinney, Mesquite, Oak Cliff, Plano and Richardson). Within months, we expanded to five more (Colleyville, Garland, Grand Prairie, Grapevine and Southlake). And we designed the project to make it easier for you to find your community’s news: We package the hyperlocal stories with more in-depth articles from elsewhere in the newsroom and deliver them straight to your inbox in weekly newsletters. You can also find the stories on our website under the umbrella of [dallasnews.com/local](. The Dallas Morning News wants to be the go-to daily news source for all of North Texas, not only Dallas. We’ve asked for your feedback through surveys and answered your questions through our [Curious Texas]( platform, and we’re not finished. We’d love to hear what stories you care about most and hope to expand the project beyond 15 communities. [Our success depends on readers like you becoming members.]( You’ll be investing in journalism that makes a difference and keeps you more informed about your community. Thank you for reading The Dallas Morning News.   Sincerely, Jamie Hancock North Texas Editor  [BECOME A MEMBER]( STAY CONNECTED WITH US [Unsubscribe]( | [Free newsletters]( | [Dallasnews.com]( | [Subscriber login]( | [Privacy Policy]( | [Contact us]( Copyright 2021 - [The Dallas Morning News, 1954 Commerce Street, Dallas, TX 75201, United States](

Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
