The encampment had been in a vacant lot just south of Deep Ellum for months, before the lot owner, Johnny Aguinaga, received a code violation notice in late January for misusing the land. The city gave Aguinaga a week to empty the space. If the tents were still there, the city could fine him up to $2,000 daily. In an effort to clear the lot, Office of Homeless Solutions staff members met with Camp Rhonda residents to discuss placement needs. About 16 agreed to move into Hotel Miramar, a city-owned hotel for homeless people who have tested positive for the coronavirus. A little over a month later, almost all of the Camp Rhonda residents are at the new location downtown along with a newly painted banner that reads, "HOUSING NOW."
