[Once considered a priority, most Texas teachers likely wonât get a vaccine until summer](
Slowly and erratically, coronavirus vaccines are making their way to people across the country, [but most Texas educators wonât be receiving them anytime soon.]( While nearly half of U.S. states have prioritized educators as part of their vaccine rollout, Texas did not, even though state leaders suggested that teachers be in the current wave of immunizations. Given current demand in the state and the crush on its vaccine allocations, itâs highly unlikely that all Texas teachers will be in line to get the shots until the school year is finished. "Itâs clear that weâre an afterthought," said Ovidia Molina, president of the Texas State Teachers Association. "Weâre not âessential employeesâ until you want schools back open, and then weâre not essential after they are." [Gohmert fined $5,000 for walking around metal detector at U.S. House](
[Rep. Louie Gohmert of Tyler has been fined $5,000 for bypassing metal detectors at the U.S. House]( becoming one of first two GOP resisters punished under a rule enacted after the Capitol riot. Lawmakers who bypass the metal detectors face a $5,000 fine for a first offense and $10,000 for each offense after that. If lawmakers donât pay within 90 days, the fine will be deducted from their paychecks. For repeat offenders, that could add up. The salary for rank and file House members is $174,000. And scofflaws are not allowed to pay the fine with campaign funds or their House office budget. Â Watchdog: At the Texas Capitol, 1,000 new air-cleaning units have been installed for $1 million to fight the coronavirus. [The lawmaker in charge won't come clean]( about details. Starting with Monday nightâs home game against Minnesota, the Dallas Mavericks finally will have fans in American Airlines Center, but not just any fans: [1,500 essential workers, who will be admitted for free.]( "We owe so much to people who have put their lives at risk to make us safer," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said in a news release. "Bringing them to a Mavs game is the least we can do!" Quietly in recent days, the Mavericks have sent invitations through local hospitals, the city of Dallas (police, fire, emergency workers) and partner grocery stores and will randomly pick which vaccinated workers will attend four games, free, starting Monday. He spent a week haggling over prospects via text. He moved money around like a veteran Reddit investor. He worked through one very sensitive phone call. Jon Daniels had buttoned-up all the business when he went to his sonâs baseball practice.
Which is where he overheard one 14-year-old teammate tell Daniels-the-younger about his favorite player: Elvis Andrus. The kid loved him. Loved watching him play.
"Iâm sitting there biting my lip, thinking âWell, have I got some news for you,'" Daniels said Saturday [about an hour after trading the poor kidâs favorite away.]( "But it was a reminder of how popular Elvis is and for all very positive reasons.
