(Family photo) COMMENTARY [Even on the day she died, Serena Simmons Connelly was still using her riches as a sword for justice in Dallas and beyond]( columnist Sharon Grigsby: In this terrible time, when the coronavirus sucks all the air out of the room, it’s utterly unsurprising that other significant tragedies in North Texas pass with little notice. One of those, back on April 22, was the death of Serena Simmons Connelly, [who spent most of her 50 years on earth fighting on behalf of the most marginalized among us](. Serena was born into money, the youngest daughter of the late billionaire and philanthropist Harold Simmons. Yet from a young age, she predicated her life on helping others — pursuing a master's degree in social work at the University of Texas at Arlington and battling inequity in her work with local HIV and AIDS patients. More than half of American’s 900-plane fleet is already grounded as travel demand has dropped to less than 10% of historic levels. Thousands of flights have been canceled, too.  Also: Dating giant Match Group has seen a boost to dating app use [as pandemic isolation drags on for singles](.   And: [Uber]( is cutting 3,700 jobs and closing driver centers in the first round of cost-saving moves.  ADVERTISEMENT (Ryan Michalesko/Staff Photographer) PHOTO OF THE DAY Staff from Baylor University Medical Center watch as the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels fly over downtown Dallas as part of their "America Strong" tour today. The event was part of a national tribute to medical professionals, first responders and other front-line workers risking their lives during the coronavirus pandemic. ADVERTISEMENT FINALLY... [A food system ‘awakening’? How the pandemic could change the way we eat]( Fears of a national food shortage have circulated since the coronavirus secured a foothold in the U.S. and sparked initial panic shopping, which emptied grocery stores shelves. And now, with a growing number of industrial meat processing plants shuttering as workers become infected, and grocery stores limiting meat purchases, those fears have resurfaced. Experts say, though, that the threat is not a national food shortage but rather a [fundamental breakdown of the intricate supply chain system that gets food onto people’s tables](. 👋 That's all for this afternoon!
