Here is a look at the top headlines of the day. 🔎 Prefer the online view? It's [here.]( As Jim Mullen, pictured at left in front of the Irving hotel where he is in self-quarantine, eagerly awaits reuniting with his family, wife Gina and daughter Gracie, photographed with a recent photo of the three of them at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. (The Dallas Morning News) CORONAVIRUS [What Dallas lawyer who nursed New York coronavirus victims wants you to know]( columnist Sharon Grigsby writes: Dallas lawyer Jim Mullen, back in North Texas after pulling 21 straight nursing shifts among some of the most critically ill coronavirus patients in New York City, is unconvinced that anyone would be interested in the solitary aftermath of his lifesaving work. [For 10 days, he’s confined himself to a small Irving hotel room]( catching up on legal work and sleep -- and dreaming of the day later this month when, fingers crossed, he can reunite with his wife, Gina, an ER doctor fighting COVID-19 in Dallas, and their little daughter, Gracie. "There’s not really much going on here," he laughed. "The only thing more boring than being in quarantine might be reading about it." Also: Dallas County reports 237 more [coronavirus cases]( its new highest single-day jump. And: What will school look like in August? Not business as usual, [Dallas superintendent says](. ADVERTISEMENT  BUSINESS [Gold’s Gym files for bankruptcy, as closures put Dallas-based chain behind on payments]( Dallas-based fitness chain Gold’s Gym filed for bankruptcy protection Monday and plans to restructure its debt and close locations, the latest company succumbing to the financial pressures of the COVID-19 downturn. Gold’s Gym International, which is headquartered in Dallas’ Uptown neighborhood, said it is proceeding with a "pre-negotiated" Chapter 11 restructuring that will allow it to emerge around Aug. 1 while continuing to operate. It closed 32 clubs as part of the bankruptcy, including three in the Dallas area, the company said. [The bankruptcy doesn’t impact the club’s franchise operators]( which run about 90% of all Gold’s Gym locations.  Also: [Sephora]( is threatening to pull out of J.C. Penney stores.   Mitchell Schnurman: ‘C’mon back,’ says [Baylor Scott & White]( in a bid to entice patients and boost revenue.  POLITICS [Texas needs unified approach in coronavirus fight]( columnist Gromer Jeffers writes: North Texans trying to maneuver through the coronavirus pandemic are being deluged with conflicting messages from their elected officials. The lack of a unified approach from our federal, state and local officials have left residents to digest disparate information to determine the ferocity of the COVID-19 threat. How safe is it to go outside? [Opinions vary, and every elected leader has a doctor or scientist to back up their moves](. The different approaches don’t help residents who need consistent guidance on how to navigate life in the coronavirus era.  Also: Joe Biden and LULAC spotlight [coronavirus outbreaks at meatpacking plants]( and blame President Trump.   And: [George W. Bush]( in a call for unity, says Americans ‘are not partisan combatants’ amid coronavirus outbreak.  ADVERTISEMENT (Tom Fox / Staff Photographer) PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST Dallas Morning News visual journalist Tom Fox was named one of this year’s Pulitzer Prize finalists in the breaking news photography category this afternoon for this photo from June 17, 2019. When a gunman clad in a mask and combat gear opened fire with an assault weapon outside the Earle Cabell Federal Building that day, Fox was standing near the doors for a routine assignment. He heard gunshots, then saw a man coming around the corner of the building. "So I pulled up my long lens and saw someone who I realized was the shooter," he said. "And I think, ‘Oh my God.’ I squeezed off a few frames as he picked something up — a clip, I think — and then I turned and ran." Hilburn]( filed for bankruptcy. - Weather: [Two cold fronts]( this week will bring a chance of storms to Dallas-Fort Worth. - Tim Cowlishaw: Could a ‘new normal’ in sports keep fans from attending massive gatherings like [Texas-OU at the Cotton Bowl]( ADVERTISEMENT FINALLY... [Retired engineer turns to pottery to help make the world a better place]( Bill Reed’s hobby of hand-crafting ceramic bowls helps feed hungry people and helps feed his soul. [The retired Raytheon engineer]( donates them to Empty Bowls of Denton, a nonprofit group that sells the bowls to help fight hunger locally. Reed, who lives in Denton, estimates he's given more than 2,500 bowls to Empty Bowls over 15 years. "This is a system where everybody wins," says Reed, 74. 👋 That's all for this afternoon!
