COURTS[A family called for help, police responded with violence. Now they’re suing for reforms](
A mother whose family was roughed up by DeSoto police after she called 911 filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the Dallas suburb on Monday, seeking reforms to protect other African American residents.
The claim alleges Sammie Anderson and two of her adult sons, Grant and Sam Bible, [were victims of racial profiling, excessive force and unlawful detention]( by six officers who responded to their home in August 2018.
Also: Trial began Monday for one of four men [charged in the slaying of 13-year-old Shavon Randle.](
And: A Plano church volunteer [was sentenced to 40 years in prison]( after pleading guilty to child sex abuse charges.

[American Airlines adds daily nonstop flight to California’s coast, citing ‘incredible’ interest](
American Airlines will bring back nonstop flights between DFW International Airport and Monterey on the California coast and operate the service year-round starting in April.
American ran seasonal service last year between DFW and Monterey Regional Airport, giving North Texans access to the mountainous coastal area about 80 miles south of San Francisco. [It’s now bringing that back and extending the flights year-round.](

[Confidential access to contraception for Texas teens has declined, according to a new study](
Texas’ overhaul of family planning programs has left teens in the state with fewer options to get contraception without parental consent, [according to a new study in the peer-reviewed Journal of Adolescent Health.](
The study documents how publicly funded family planning providers struggled to provide teens with confidential access to contraception after Texas cut the state family planning budget in 2011 and excluded Planned Parenthood from funding.

In Highland Park, where already one high school student has died by suicide since the first of the year, a community that has long worn the mask of perfection is confronting the reality that it’s not immune from the mental health crisis killing teens nationwide.
Moving from talk to action around this painful and difficult topic has been excruciatingly slow. But kudos to school administrators, with a big assist from eyes-wide-open community leaders, [for taking a bold step that districts such as Dallas and Frisco have yet to take.](
