[Judge jails defense attorney for Dallas man who beat up Muhlaysia Booker in viral video](
The defense attorney for the man accused of beating Muhlaysia Booker was held in criminal contempt Thursday after what the judge called repeated outbursts in the courtroom.
Andrew Wilkerson is representing Edward Thomas, who is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the April 12 attack at a Dallas apartment complex, which was captured on viral video.
State District Judge Hector Garza gave Wilkerson 14 days in jail and a $500 fine after finding him contempt.
Garza called a recess and sent the jury out after a confrontation with Wilkerson after the prosecution objected to the defense attorney's questioning of a witness. Wilkerson cursed under his breath as he turned around, before he left the room. When he and the other attorneys returned, along with the judge, [Garza announced that he was holding Wilkerson in contempt for "continued outbursts" in the courtroom.](

EDUCATION
[Dallas ISD scuttles effort possibly partnering future ‘Baby Booker T.’ with area nonprofit](
Dallas ISD wants to reconfigure South Dallas’ Martin Luther King Jr. Learning Center to become a new campus that would serve as an incubator for the arts from students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
But the district’s efforts to fast-track MLK to become a "Baby Booker T." sputtered to a stop this week, just days before a key component was going to be decided at Thursday’s board meeting. The idea was to replicate the success of the district’s prestigious performing and visual arts high school, Booker T. Washington, and potentially funnel students nurtured at MLK into that magnet school.
To make the school happen, DISD was trying to move several pieces at once: opening the door to use a new state law that incentivizes school districts to form partnerships with outside entities to run its campuses; and having trustees vote on a consolidation between MLK and a neighboring elementary campus, Paul L. Dunbar Learning Center.

[Southwest Airlines delays return of 737 Max until February](
Southwest Airlines is removing the Boeing 737 Max from flight schedules until at least Feb. 8, [casting further doubt whether the aircraft will be cleared to fly soon.](
Dallas-based Southwest said Thursday that it will pull the plane from flying schedules through Feb. 8, a month later than the company previously said. It will remove about 175 daily flights during peak flying times.
Southwest has the world’s largest fleet of 737 Max planes with 34, which the FAA grounded in March following two deadly plane crashes overseas tied to faulty software. But by the end of the year, it was scheduled to get another 41 planes, further straining the airline’s fleet.
Southwest leaders have already said it would take up to two months to get the Max ready to fly again after the FAA recertified the aircraft.

[Latest Democratic debate pitted revolution vs. restoration](
From contributing columnist Carl P. Leubsdorf:
The latest Democratic debate provided a dramatic display of the divide between the advocates of revolution and restoration in the party’s presidential race. It also illustrated the contest’s revised pecking order
On one side, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders argued the country needs major structural reforms and defended far-reaching proposals epitomized by the plan offering "Medicare for All."
On the other side, South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar joined former Vice President Joe Biden in seeking more modest programs and warning costly new programs could jeopardize Democratic chances of defeating President Donald Trump.
Beyond reflecting differences in the best Democratic path for 2020, the debate sponsored by CNN and The New York Times [illustrated some potential problems facing the more sweeping Sanders and Warren proposals.](
