The defense tried to establish that Botham Jean was so close to Guyger that she had no choice but to shoot the man she believed to be a burglar in her home.  [Evening roundup]( 09/26/2019 By Wayne Carter Good Evening! Here is a look at the top headlines of the day. 🔎 Prefer the online view? It's [here.]( Amber Guyger leaves the 204th District Court after her murder trial recessed for the day Thursday at the Frank Crowley Courts Building in Dallas.(Tom Fox / Staff Photographer) AMBER GUYGER TRIAL [Prosecution contrasts Amber Guyger's spotless uniform with 'heroic' efforts of fellow officers]( The prosecution rested Thursday in Amber Guyger's murder case, but not before contrasting the lifesaving efforts of first responders trying to revive Botham Jean with Guyger: texting on her phone in a spotless uniform. "What you guys did was exceptionally heroic," lead prosecutor Jason Hermus told Dallas Officer Tu Nguyen, one of the first officers at the scene of last September's shooting at the South Side Flats apartments. [Guyger, 31, was off duty but still in her Dallas police uniform]( Sept. 6, 2018, when she fatally shot her upstairs neighbor in his apartment near downtown. Podcast: Listen to Episode 7 of our audio report [on Day 3 of Amber Guyger's murder trial.]( ADVERTISEMENT IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY [Impeachment talk is usually cheap politics. Right now, we need to pay attention]( From Rudolph Bush, DMN deputy editorial page editor: Democracy is a fragile thing. It depends first on the acknowledgment that we all can’t win all of the time. It requires us to live together in political peace even when things don’t break our way. To exist in this manner, we absolutely must accept that our internal political differences are just that — ours. And when the elections are over, we accept the results and we work together — sometimes in opposition, sometimes in unity — to govern a complex and plural nation. [The question about what the president did with Ukraine is one that we must answer.]( There is sufficient information, from the president’s own words, to deserve greater investigation. To draw a foreign power into our elections, to attempt to use a foreign government to undermine a political rival is deeply un-American. It is undemocratic. It puts at risk our long experiment in governance in this country.   Whistleblower complaint: A nine-page document released Thursday [says President Trump abused his power]( by prodding Ukraine to investigate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.   Ripple effect: The drive to impeach President Donald Trump [could have an impact on Texas in the 2020 election.](  BUSINESS [Fidel Castro seized a Havana airport in 1959. The owner's family now wants American Airlines to pay up]( In an anticipated legal case, American Airlines has become the first air carrier to be [sued for conducting business on properties confiscated by the government in Cuba]( despite having obtained authorization from the Obama administration to fly to the island. The federal lawsuit, which also includes Chile's LATAM Airlines, was filed in Miami on Wednesday by Jose Ramon Lopez Regueiro. He is the son of Jose Lopez Vilaboy, a businessman close to Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista who was the owner in 1959 of what is now Havana's Jose Marti International Airport before it was confiscated by the revolutionary government led by Fidel Castro. According to the lawsuit, Lopez Vilaboy bought the land of the Rancho Boyeros airport from its previous owner, Pan American Airways, in 1952 for $1.5 million in cash. The Cuban businessman then modernized the runway and built the airport terminal that he renamed Jose Marti. Lopez Regueiro sued the two airlines for the use of the Havana airport facilities without his authorization, which constitutes "unlawful trafficking in his confiscated property in Cuba," the lawsuit says, in violation of Title III of the Helms-Burton law.  Gridiron getaway: There are plenty of luxurious places to stay [for Oklahoma and Texas fans visiting Dallas for the Red River Showdown.](   Retail Therapy: Royal Blue Grocery has opened in downtown Dallas, [and Oak Cliff is next.](  ADVERTISEMENT (Ashley Landis/Staff Photographer) PHOTO OF THE DAY Texas Rangers first baseman Ronald Guzman (left) and right fielder Shin-Soo Choo trot out of the dugout to their positions during Wednesday night's game against the Boston Red Sox at Globe Life Park in Arlington. Beat writer Evan Grant says the Rangers are ready for the roof at their new stadium next year [after playing 759 games at Globe Life when the temperature at first pitch was at least 90 degrees.]( EDITORS' PICKS - Social media myth: Dallas police have debunked a viral post [about officers trolling a wanted man]( by posting to his Facebook account from his confiscated phone. - Hot plates: Bawdy dessert shop Better Than Sex [pours some sugar on Plano's date-night scene.]( - Tech review: The price is right for the Raspberry Pi 4, [a big computer in a very small package]( writes Jim Rossman. FINALLY... [Good riddance to Booker T. suburban cheaters, but DISD’s successful programs can woo parents the right way]( From The Dallas Morning News Editorial Board: We strongly support Dallas school leaders’ crackdown on suburban parents who have cheated to get their kids into the prestigious Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. The district reports that the list of three dozen incoming teens who withdrew or never showed up for class mirrors the students whom the district red-flagged this summer because of residency concerns. The district’s sound new policy of triple-checking whether a kid actually lives in Dallas ISD has apparently run off the unscrupulous parents who paid to use someone’s address or other underhanded means to unfairly sneak their kids into the school. But as we celebrate getting rid of the scofflaws, we can’t lose sight that the reason suburban parents are clamoring for Booker T. is that it is one of the best high schools for the arts in the nation. [It’s offering exactly the kind of excellence that DISD so sorely needs to attract families and entice others to stay.]( 👋 That's all for this afternoon!
