[Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says he will defy NRA, take lead on gun background checks](
AUSTIN -- Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says he's "willing to take an arrow" and defy the National Rifle Association by pressing Texas to close one loophole in gun-purchaser background checks.
On Friday, Patrick said it's "common sense" to tighten background-check laws because in many instances, stranger-to-stranger sales now are exempt from the requirement that buyers be vetted through a federal database of people not eligible to purchase firearms.
Patrick wants to protect transfers among family members from triggering a check. He'd also continue to exempt friends, though he acknowledged that could be abused. Patrick, who presides over the Texas Senate, said he's willing to accede to the preferences of senators on whether to maintain that loophole -- and if so, exactly how.
[But he said Texas must strongly discourage selling guns to strangers without a background check.](

CRIME AND COURTS
[Hundreds of potential jurors in Amber Guyger murder trial stretch jury room to capacity](
The process of selecting a jury for the murder trial of fired Dallas police officer Amber Guyger began Friday with a rush of hundreds of prospective jurors, members of the media รขยย and even a Dallas fire marshal.
Potential jurors showed up Friday at the Frank Crowley Courts Building outside downtown Dallas exactly one year after the death of Botham Jean, the 26-year-old accountant Guyger fatally shot in his apartment.
About 4,000 Dallas County residents were summoned, but the court expects only around 600 to show up because of usual low turnout. But more may have shown up than expected.

FINALLY...
[As a key figure in the JFK assassination, Jim Leavelle was one of the most famous police detectives of all time](
From Watchdog columnist Dave Lieber:
"He killed him! On the television!"
The speaker was my grandmother. The date was Nov. 24, 1963. Jack Ruby had just shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald on live TV. I arrived at Nana's house to find her in this fury. I was 6 years old.
Watching the horrific TV replays with Nana there was no way, of course, that I would know that 30 years later I would meet the police detective in the light-colored Resistol who was handcuffed to Oswald at the time of the televised murder.
But that's what happened. On the 30th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Southern Methodist University held a forum that included retired Dallas Police Detective Jim Leavelle and other eyewitnesses. Afterward, outside on the lawn, I introduced myself to Leavelle (pronounced luh-VELL) and told him how much I, as a lover of American history, appreciated hearing his eyewitness account.
He gave me his business card.
[It would come in handy.](
