DALLAS
[He was charged with fraud. The city of Dallas hired him anyway.](
Four years ago, a midlevel manager in the city of Dallas housing department helped steer more than $800,000 in federal funds to a friend who owned a construction company. The friendâs job: to rebuild eight run-down houses for low-income residents.
The project was a mess. The homes were riddled with defects and built up to 18 months behind schedule. Among the problems: missing gutters, faulty electric circuits, gaps between cabinets, and a home hanging over the edge of its foundation.
After The Dallas Morning News exposed the problem last year, the feds weighed in with a scathing 24-page audit. They told the city to hire someone else to make sure the houses were structurally sound.
So how did the city respond? [It hired an engineer who had been charged with fraud, lost his engineering license and filed for bankruptcy, The News has found.](

BUSINESS
[Got 30 yearsâ experience and looking for work? Some firms want to hear from you]( business columnist Mitchell Schnurman:
Todayâs labor force has more older workers than ever, and as many aging baby boomers keep on working, the numbers seem destined to climb.
Yet the vast majority of Americans over 50 believe their age is a disadvantage in finding a job, according to one survey. And well over half cited age discrimination at work, another poll found.
Maybe candidates should look in other places and consider other kinds of jobs, [because some employers are very interested in them.](
Andy Cohen, who owns three companies in Irving and Plano, said he loves to hire mature adults. In fact, Cohen said he recently ran an advertisement seeking applicants with a minimum of 30 yearsâ experience â a way to signal older workers to apply.

Delicate and classic tea sandwiches have often been thought of as old-fashioned, writes contributor Rebecca White. Even though a tea sandwich is English, it has carved out a place in American society at celebratory gatherings. Traditionally, tea sandwiches are served with afternoon tea to keep hunger at bay until supper. [And this traditional approach still shines at the afternoon tea service at the French Room in the Adolphus Hotel.](

FINALLY...
[Humperdinks Brewpub closes final 2 restaurants in Arlington and Dallas]( sip of Dallas history has slipped away with the shuttering of Humperdinks Brewpub's last two restaurants in North Texas. The first one opened in North Texas 43 years ago, in 1976.
Humperdinks was a beer pioneer in Dallas-Fort Worth. The company brewed beer since the mid-'90s, during a Dallas brewpub boom that Humperdinks survived â while others like Routh Street Brewery and Copper Tank Brewery didn't. Humperdinks continued to operate as a brewpub, persisting through a craft-beer drought. The scene finally took off in North Texas in 2012.
Humperdinks served many beers over many years. [Its remaining locations hung on, until now.](
