[Morning roundup]( 07/05/2019 By Narda Pérez and Carla Solórzano Good morning! Here is a look at the top headlines as we start the day. 🌞 Weather: Partly cloudy and very warm. High of 93. 🔎 Prefer the online view? It's [her]( Ola arrived in Dallas from Illinois on June 11, the first time in 57 years that painted dogs had lived at the zoo. (Courtesy of Dallas Zoo) NEWS [Dallas Zoo's new African painted dogs kill packmate]( Ola, a female African painted dog who had moved to the Dallas Zoo less than a month ago, has been killed by her packmates, the zoo announced Thursday. The 8-year-old dog was found Thursday morning after Jata and Mzingo, 2-year-old brothers, attacked her. The male animals also recently moved to the zoo to complete the pack. [The attack happened overnight while the zoo was closed](.  And: A 17-year-old boy was found dead in Grapevine Lake [after he was missing in the water at least an hour]( Thursday afternoon, authorities said.   Also: More than a dozen local and statewide nonprofits have [formed the Force for Immigrant Rights and Empowerment, known as FIRE](.  ADVERTISEMENT CRIME [Former Dallas Cowboy Josh Brent wanted on probation violation after arrest in Coppell]( Former Dallas Cowboy Josh Brent could be headed to prison after [he was accused of violating the probation he received for the drunken-driving crash]( that killed his teammate and best friend, Jerry Brown. A warrant for Brent's arrest was issued this week for violating his probation, according to the Dallas County Sheriff's Department. The warrant came after the former defensive tackle's arrest Sunday in Coppell on charges of assault on a public servant and resisting arrest. A public intoxication charge is pending, Coppell police say. Brent did not appear to be in the Dallas County jail Thursday. It was unclear whether Brent, 31, had hired an attorney.  And: Wylie police say they have arrested a man who was [filmed unscrewing a light bulb from a front porch while wearing nothing but women's underwear](.   Also: A [3-year-old boy was wounded early Thursday]( when someone fired into a crowd, Fort Worth police say.  COMMENTARY [An obituary for a Preston Hollow landmark soon to be destroyed for 5 new mansions]( City columnist Robert Wilonsky writes: The giant for-sale signs planted on five pastoral acres at a busy North Dallas intersection are gone now, after years of pleading for a deep-pocketed taker with millions to spare. In their place are two newly minted blue boards — one beside Walnut Hill Lane, another facing Inwood Road. "The Gates at Preston Hollow," the new signs say, promising before summer's end a groundbreaking on this idyllic corner. Soon this vestigial remnant of farmland,[the ownership of which we can trace back to the 1850s, will be carved up and obscured behind concrete.]( Five sprawling custom-designed mansions will be planted on lots about an acre each in size, across Inwood from Ursuline Academy of Dallas. Platinum Series Homes, they are called, because, of course, they are. Every manse will hide behind 9-foot walls. The website says The Gates is "an exclusive and expansive residential development." In time, those of us who drive past this forested land along a meandering creek will no longer be able to see this place — an unfathomable and surprisingly heartbreaking thing. It has always been visible, approachable, this last surviving bit of long-ago that somehow made it intact to the here-and-now.  Also: In backyard barbecues and ballpark fireworks,[Americans celebrate the chemistry of democracy](.   And: Baptized by fire — there’s a reason [we set off fireworks for America’s birthday](.  ADVERTISEMENT EDITORS' PICKS - Concerts: The Basically Beethoven Festival, which launches Sunday, has been [offering free performances for almost 40 years](. - Also: A 41-year-old man with an intellectual disability[was found dead Thursday near the adult living center]( he called home after he was reported missing earlier in the week, police say. - Watchdog: This is [how Texas lawmakers avoided true property tax reform]( and instead gave us fluff and stuff. McCarthy/Staff Photographer) FINALLY [Can you add your partner’s last name and keep your maiden name in Texas? Curious Texas investigates]( When Dana Newland visited her local Social Security office shortly after marrying, she realized that taking her husband's last name was not a simple task. She said she was given three options. She could opt out of changing her name, drop her maiden name and take her husband’s last name, or change her middle name to her maiden name and take her husband’s last name. Because she married in her late 30s, Newland said, she felt odd changing her middle name. She also felt wrong about losing her maiden name. But is [changing an existing name as easy as giving a baby a new one?]( Not necessarily.  👋 That's all for this morning! For up-to-the-minute news and analysis, check out [DallasNews.com](.
