COMMENTARY
[An obituary for a Preston Hollow landmark soon to be destroyed for 5 new mansions](
City columnist Robert Wilonsky writes:
The giant for-sale signs planted on five pastoral acres at a busy North Dallas intersection are gone now, after years of pleading for a deep-pocketed taker with millions to spare. In their place are two newly minted blue boards — one beside Walnut Hill Lane, another facing Inwood Road. "The Gates at Preston Hollow," the new signs say, promising before summer's end a groundbreaking on this idyllic corner.
Soon this vestigial remnant of farmland,[the ownership of which we can trace back to the 1850s, will be carved up and obscured behind concrete.]( Five sprawling custom-designed mansions will be planted on lots about an acre each in size, across Inwood from Ursuline Academy of Dallas. Platinum Series Homes, they are called, because, of course, they are. Every manse will hide behind 9-foot walls. The website says The Gates is "an exclusive and expansive residential development."
In time, those of us who drive past this forested land along a meandering creek will no longer be able to see this place — an unfathomable and surprisingly heartbreaking thing. It has always been visible, approachable, this last surviving bit of long-ago that somehow made it intact to the here-and-now.

And: Baptized by fire — there’s a reason [we set off fireworks for America’s birthday](.

[Can you add your partner’s last name and keep your maiden name in Texas? Curious Texas investigates](
When Dana Newland visited her local Social Security office shortly after marrying, she realized that taking her husband's last name was not a simple task.
She said she was given three options. She could opt out of changing her name, drop her maiden name and take her husband’s last name, or change her middle name to her maiden name and take her husband’s last name.
Because she married in her late 30s, Newland said, she felt odd changing her middle name. She also felt wrong about losing her maiden name.
But is [changing an existing name as easy as giving a baby a new one?]( Not necessarily.
