Here is a look at the top headlines of the day. 🔎 Prefer the online view? (Ryan Michalesko/Staff Photographer) COURTS & CRIME [Fired Dallas officer Amber Guyger appears in court for murder case in shooting death of Botham Jean]( Fired Dallas police officer Amber Guyger appeared in court Thursday, her first time before the judge who will oversee her murder trial in the shooting death of Botham Jean. During a 12-minute hearing, [state District Judge Tammy Kemp quizzed attorneys about the leaking of Guyger's 911 call after the shooting despite a gag order.]( In the call, Guyger sounds frantic about shooting Jean but also repeatedly mentions that she is going to lose her job as a police officer. Guyger sat ramrod straight during the proceedings at the Frank Crowley Courts Building just outside downtown Dallas. She did not speak. Before the hearing began, she whispered "excuse me" to a man standing in the courtroom aisle who was preventing her from heading to the defense table. There probably will also be two pretrial hearings in July, but those dates have not been set. Testimony is scheduled to begin Sept. 23. Also: Prosecutors rested their case Thursday against the woman accused of crafting the [2015 plot to murder a Dallas pediatric dentist](. Shots fired: A Fort Worth police officer [shot a suspect who lunged at him]( while he was investigating a possible burglary Wednesday night, police said. ADVERTISEMENT POLITICS [In reversal, Beto O'Rourke picks party loyalty over friendship with vow to oppose Rep. Will Hurd]( Stung by complaints that he stayed neutral in a West Texas congressional race a fellow Democrat lost by just 926 votes, presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke reversed course — vowing Wednesday night to support Gina Ortiz Jones next year against his friend across the aisle, Rep. Will Hurd. His refusal to endorse Jones last year proved to be an irritant to some Texas Democrats during the race against Sen. Ted Cruz last year. And during his run for president, voters around the country have pressed the El Paso Democrat on the decision, including one especially testy exchange last month in New Hampshire. Before the surprise reversal, he dug in, insisting that the goal of maintaining a valuable bipartisan friendship and alliance was more important than one particular U.S. House seat. Asked to explain the change of heart, [he took a swipe at Hurd, suggesting that the San Antonio Republican isn't willing to confront President Donald Trump]( — at least, not in the way a Democrat would.   Also: Rep. Ron Wright, R-Arlington, said on a video released by an abortion rights group that women commit murder [if they have an abortion and should "absolutely" be punished](.   And: Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday said he has urged the [Trump administration not to impose tariffs on Mexico]( because they would harm Texas' economy.  D-DAY 75th ANNIVERSARY [On the 75th anniversary of D-Day, Trump continues to fray relationships with our closest allies]( From former DMN Washington bureau chief Carl P. Leubsdorf: Seventy-five years ago, thousands of American and Allied sailors, soldiers and aviators braved heavy seas and murderous German fire in the historic invasion that began the decisive campaign to end Nazi control of Europe. The success of the D-Day landings, Europe's liberation 11 months later and its economic recovery over ensuing decades were a tribute not only to the bravery of the invading troops but to the unprecedented military and political unity that American presidents from Franklin Roosevelt to Barack Obama forged with European allies. But as President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron mark Thursday's D-Day anniversary at the Colleville-sur-Mer cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, [that unity is fraying, thanks to increasing nationalism within Europe and the tensions Trump has created]( by questioning the value of the continuing NATO alliance and clashing with longtime U.S. allies over trade.  Commentary: My father served on D-Day, [and he inspired me to pursue a life of public service]( writes U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul.   Archives: Sirens alerted a sleeping Dallas [that the assault on Fortress Europe had begun.](  ADVERTISEMENT (Ben Torres/Special Contributor) PHOTO OF THE DAY The El Peje cocktail at La Viuda Negra, essentially a spiced-up cucumber margarita, is festively arranged, the drink in a tajin-rimmed glass, tilted just so in a bowl filled with crushed ice and flanked by a trio of watermelon spheres that brighten the palate. Set behind a door marked only with its appropriately coy logo, La Viuda Negra — or, "The Black Widow" — is intentionally discreet, [a speakeasy-style gem hidden in plain sight]( says writer Marc Ramirez. FINALLY... ['Texas in my heart': Aging Tongans still call Euless home]( The first thing you need to know about the Tongan people is that no matter how far they are from their South Pacific home, they stay together. Euless happens to be home to more than 3,000 Tongans, many of whom settled here in the mid-'70s. They came for a better life for their families and jobs with the airlines and at DFW International Airport. They stayed because, as Penilotu "Peni" Asaeli puts it, after a few years, "I had Texas in my heart." Two generations later, they are senior citizens. As they have always done, [they remain true to the practices of their native country even as they have built a thriving life here.]( "We never put anyone in a nursing home or senior home," says Asaeli, who became paralyzed after a car accident. "That is not our way." 👋 That's all for this afternoon! For up-to-the-minute news and analysis, check out [DallasNews.com](. Share the love!
