DALLAS[Northwest Dallas property owners could get tax breaks amid fight over 20-acre Salvation Army campus](
On the same day the Dallas City Council is scheduled to decide on the Salvation Army's planned 20-acre, $95 million campus off North Stemmons Freeway, the voting agenda will also feature a plan that [offers nearby property and business owners future tax incentives and economic development grants.](
Some of the property owners are the very same ones who have pushed City Hall to reject the Salvation Army's plans.
City officials, including the council member for that slice of northwest Dallas, insist the two agenda items aren't linked. But north Oak Cliff representative Scott Griggs, a mayoral candidate, couldn't deny there's at least the appearance of a political quid pro quo.
"We should be honest with the public," Griggs said Monday, as the council's Quality of Life, Arts & Culture Committee discussed the creation of a neighborhood empowerment zone that would include the Salvation Army site. "It has nothing to do with the Salvation Army and everything to do with the Salvation Army."

SPORTS[Stars top Predators in OT to advance to second round of Stanley Cup playoffs](
The playoffs are a minefield, scattered with ways to fail on the path to the Stanley Cup. There's off nights from goaltenders and more from power plays, a dominant top line or a dormant one. There are also ways to make heroes in the playoffs, the contributions from trade deadline acquisitions or from rookies, the games from third-liners and once-healthy scratches.
It's difficult and surprising and expectedly unpredictable, and this is how it's supposed to go.
[On Monday, in the Stars' 2-1 overtime win in Game 6 over the Predators]( there was a thriller after a heart-stopping third period and up-and-down extra frame, a gasp for air from Nashville via Pekka Rinne and a suffocation from Dallas and Ben Bishop.
Now, the Predators have been extinguished. A new challenge awaits the Stars later this week.

[âIâm ready to get goingâ: Dallas County DA moving forward with plans even with police pushback](
After a long week of political pushback and even calls for his ouster, Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot told city officials on Monday heâs[still moving forward with his plan to drop prosecutions of some low-level crimes]( including particular types of thefts.
"I have a long track record of making a difference. If I sat around and waited for everyone else ... we would have never made a difference because everyone is always scared to change," Creuzot said. "Iâve never let that be a hindrance to me."
The Dallas City Councilâs Public Safety & Criminal Justice Committee had invited Creuzot to explain his plans, which have caught the ire of some state officials â including the state's governor â and police groups. Creuzot continued to defend his policies as a way to reduce incarceration and recidivism, which he says will benefit taxpayers.
Â
Political pushback: Some of the stateâs top Republican leaders, [including Gov. Greg Abbott]( have accused Dallas District Attorney John Creuzot of spreading lawlessness and socialism as a result of his plans.
