OLDEST MAN[Nation's oldest man and WWII veteran, Austin's Richard Overton, dies at 112](
The nation's oldest man has died.
Richard Overton, a lifelong Austin resident and also the oldest U.S. veteran, [died Thursday at age 112](.
Overton was released Monday from a hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia and moved into an Austin rehabilitation facility. He died there after 5 p.m., according to his third cousin, Volma Overton.
"We are thankful for everything he's done for the family, for the world," Volma said through tears. "We're going to miss him."

[Dallas County's new district attorney fires 12 prosecutors before taking office Jan. 1](
The incoming Dallas County district attorney [who ran on a platform of criminal justice reform has fired 12 people]( including the heads of the juvenile, crimes against children and appellate divisions.
Democrat John Creuzot, who handily defeated Republican Faith Johnson in the Nov. 6 election, made the staffing changes before he takes office Tuesday.
Creuzot has pledged to reduce mass incarceration, improve access to mental health care and drug treatment and reduce prosecution of nonviolent offenses. He says part of that work will involve additional training for prosecutors.
The DA-elect was explicit on the campaign trail that he will not tolerate overly aggressive prosecution and prosecutorial misconduct.
Meanwhile: Texas was among the states [with the most on-duty officer deaths in 2018](.
Also: U.S. stocks [ended the day on a positive note]( after the Dow fell more than 600 points.

[Birth control minutes after delivery: Good for new mothers, not financially feasible for hospitals](
Offering women a form of long-term contraception immediately after giving birth [could reduce Texas’ maternal mortality and unplanned pregnancy rates]( experts say.
Divya Patel, an assistant professor at UT Health Science Center at Tyler, spent a year researching programs that provide immediate postpartum contraception, known by the acronym IPLARC.
She said her team identified eight of Texas’ 250 birthing hospitals that have or were in the process of establishing a program by early 2017. None of them were in North Texas. The state could not say how many programs exist now.
