From the BLACKLIT bookstore in Farmers Branch, poet Tro’juan Henderson led 15 dads, including his own father who was seated next to Shaw, in an emotional event last year where the men delved into what they resented, appreciated and misunderstood about their fathers growing up. Henderson opened by reading a poem, which Shaw said functioned to air out what was “kind of like a smoky room. When you open that window and the smoke goes out, it’s like, ‘OK, now I can see across the room.’ It made it easy for everybody to just speak freely.” Shaw said Henderson’s dad had a “glowing smile” of pride as Henderson read.
