Her home, not far from the western fork of the Trinity River, had been in her family since the early 1940s. It was her grandfather’s and then her mother’s and then hers. The 67-year-old spent all but two years of her life in that home in Dallas’ Ledbetter neighborhood. Velasquez wondered how much longer it would last.
