Sadie Nardini: When I turned 40, I knew that the way I was doing yoga and other exercises was not going to be sustainable. It was hurting my joints, and I had plateaued in strength and ability. I did research on the web for fitness and wellness suggestions for people my age, and the majority of it was way too easy at best and disheartening at worst! Hearing that our bones are much more fragile now and our metabolism declines 10 percent for every decade we are alive wasn't very motivating. In fact, these articles made me feel like trainers pretty much give up on us after we hit the big 4-0. This was frustrating because my own personal practice and professional way of teaching people over 40 was, and still is, very different. I know at this age many of us have accumulated various aches and pains; however, those articles got it wrong for those like me. We don't have to lose muscle mass as we age, and our metabolism can stay vibrant and robust. If our bodies are able to move strongly, then it becomes a matter of whether we give up on movement or we choose to remotivate, get stronger, and become the best versions of ourselves, at any age. I knew it was going to be up to me to make the type of course that I wished was out there. Something that is strong enough to make real leaps in fitness yet remains conscious of the issues we face as our bodies go through the natural wear and tear of decades of use. DailyOM: What does it mean to have a "fit and fierce" workout? SN: Exercise science tells us that there are two major ways to improve all markers of one's fitness, and they get more and more important to focus on as we get older (or as I prefer to say, "become a more sought-after vintage"). One can work out less intensely and longer or more intensely and shorter. However, to develop the coveted cardiovascular health that is the foundation of optimal fitness, it is helpful to do some endurance-based strength work mixed with some higher-intensity moves to elevate the heart rate and breathing. But in our 40s and beyond, we collect more and more life responsibilities. It's not realistic to work out for hours a day, and if you are interested in developing next-level strength in your 40s and beyond, then doing only a longer, less challenging routine will not give you the results you want to see. However, joint issues, old injuries, tight muscles, and weakness from lack of movement over 40 are real things. We cannot just pound on our joints like we used to, and new exercise moves must be more personalized to each student, instead of a one-size-fits-all workout. I designed this course just for us (people who are able to move but are still building strength, or people who are already strong but want shorter blasts) with sessions that combine endurance-based moves that tone and define muscles and are done with more intensity to get better results without the impact on the joints. Remember that high intensity does not have to mean high impact. These workouts use bodyweight, better body mechanics, and the constant value of good alignment that comes from yoga. It will strengthen you right up in just a few minutes a day. DailyOM: This is a 21-day course that combines exercise and lifestyle changes. Tell us more about how you laid out the lessons and the tools you provide. SN: As a yoga teacher, I'm aware that real change does not happen unless it is holistic. We have so many levels, which include but are not limited to the physical, mental, emotional, environmental, relational, and dietary, to name a few. People can do exercise all day long, but if they don't tackle the other aspects that may hold them back, then the changes will not stick. This is not a course where you have to overhaul your life either. I made sure to include simple-yet-powerful dietary and lifestyle shifts along with the workouts. These are an invitation to look at the totality of how one is moving through the world and nourishing themselves, and to see if there are any roadblocks they can easily knock out of the way to achieve more short- and long-term progress! Specifically, students can expect compact, fun workouts that are based on safer anatomy and that activate their whole body, with a focus on different areas each session. We move fiercely yet mindfully through a five-minute warmup, then five minutes of lean muscle building with bodyweight to spark cardio, calorie burn, and metabolism. Then we cool it down with a stretch sequence that leaves the muscles longer and leaner, instead of bulking up. If a student really meets themselves where they are and does each workout with the full integrity and intensity they can muster, while respecting their limitations, they will see incredible tone, increased flexibility, and invigorated energy from just one session! DailyOM: You have a passion for championing people to live and be their best. What fuels that passion for you? What inspires you? SN: Well, I had a pretty rough physical time growing up, from severe spinal injuries to sensitivities to all kinds of foods. For years, I didn't really like or care about myself. I would eat things that made my body hurt. I would over or under exercise and would swing from one polarity to another, never seeing the transformation I wanted in my body, mind, or heart. So I've been there, and now I am here to lead the way for others, out of behaviors that do not serve their potential. Nowadays, I'm very aware of the link between how we treat ourselves and how our bodies look and feel. Yes, there are many things that are out of our control, but each of us has an opportunity to look at who we are today, then create the habits and choose the actions that will move us toward health and strength and vitality, not further away. I know firsthand that even when things seem bleak, or at least harder to accomplish, there is always the potential to evolve, feel better, be more confident, and not get in our own way as much. I had to learn that lesson too. I spent years working out too hard, eating things my body did not like, feeling tired and puffy all the time, and rinsing and repeating, until I learned there was a more effective way to move through my days. I want to pass the empowerment on to others and show them that they too are capable of more than they think, and in less time than they might imagine! DailyOM: You teach a lot about finding balance but at the same time not being afraid to challenge yourself. Explain that dichotomy and its significance in your teaching style. SN: Dichotomy is a great word for this because balance is made up of two seemingly opposed states: stopping and going full speed ahead. In order to feel and look amazing, these two ways of being must constantly dance. Problems arise when people try to work-work-work and rarely allow themselves the time to pause-pause-pause. This is a recipe for adrenal burnout, stress-related illnesses, and a body that does not feel great. And then I see the opposite too: people who have fallen off their fitness routine, who tend not to healthfully push themselves far enough during a workout, or don't do it consistently enough to see any real progress. During this journey, I encourage students to start from whichever place they find themselves on this spectrum of working too hard or not enough, and then delight in fueling themselves lovingly, moving ferociously, resting luxuriously, and making ample time for passion projects and play as well as achievement and completion of tasks. However, and here is that dance again, I also ask that when they step on the mat with me, for about 15 minutes, they give it their all. This will look different for everybody, but when they can learn to enter intensity when it is called for, then leave it behind when it is not, the rest of their experience off the mat can more effortlessly strike this beautiful balance as well. I hear from so many people who have taken this course that they came for the workouts but they got so much more: the ability to claim their unique space and voice in this world, to see where the things they were eating were actually stopping their progress, to stand up tall inside their own skin, and to learn to rock who they are at this or any age! For me as a creator, this makes what I have chosen to do with my life entirely worth it. How Does It Work?Starting today, you will receive a new lesson every day for 3 weeks (total of 21 lessons).
