By activating the vagus nerve through relaxation practices and mindful techniques, we can harness the healing potential of the vagus nerve when dealing with chronic stress, anxiety, and trauma. Meditation, breathing exercises, humming or chanting, yoga, somatic movement, massage, and even smiling or laughing can all be beneficial for increasing the health of your vagal tone. A simple breathing exercise that you can do is: Inhale through the nose for four seconds, hold your breath for two seconds, and then exhale slowly through the mouth for six seconds.
