STORY OF THE DAY
[Makhosi Khoza axed: Parliament throws disciplinary rulebook at cadre with a conscience](
By MARIANNE MERTEN
Outspoken ANC MP Makhosi Khoza was removed on Thursday as chairperson of Parliamentâs public service and administration committee on the instruction of Luthuli House. This came two days after five ANC MPs boycotted the committee over objections to her being in that position. Officially, the deployment rejig in Parliament is attributed to âa breakdown of relationsâ and is called âre-organisationâ. But the reality is that ANC factional battles, and the use of disciplinary action as a tool in the ANC kit to manage these fractures, has reached well into areas of governance and state.
[Barcelona attack rocks Las Ramblas](
The driver of a rented van has rammed into a crowd at the city's popular Las Ramblas. 13 people have been killed and 100 wounded in the attack, with the driver still on the run at present. The attack had been claimed by Islamic State, with Spanish authorities treating the ramming as a terrorist incident.
[Second attack injures seven](
Just hours after the Las Ramblas attack, another car drove into a crowd in Cambrils early on Friday morning. The attack injured six civilians and one police officer in what certainly appears to be a coordinated attack by IS against Spain.
[Obi-Wan Star Wars spinoff hinted](
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry is in negotiations to direct an unnamed film about Obi-Wan Kenobi. The news will be guaranteed to have Star Wars fans slavering at the jowls for more information, but as yet little is known. There is no script, nor any indication of a lead actor, but there is at least the promise of more Obi-Wan Kenobi.
[Tourism surge ahead of American super eclipse](
The first total eclipse to occur over the United States in 99 years has provided a noticeable bump in tourism. Eclipse-watchers have donned their NASA-glasses and headed to prime spots across a wide belt of America expected to be hit by the eclipse. Expect a significant boost in the number of eye-damaging reports of people who either forgot proper eyewear or bought dodgy glasses.
