[Daily Maverick] AFTERNOON THING with JOHN STUPART Wednesday, 18th January 2017 WHILE YOU WERE WORKING [Mali attack kills dozens] A suicide attack in Gao has killed at least 37. The victims were largely former rebels and pro-government militia housed in a local camp. Although no organisation has claimed responsibility, it is likely to be linked to Islamist militants. [SABC and Multichoice implicated in inquiry leak] Details of a leaked document from the parliamentary ad hoc committee have implicated Multichoice and the SABC in a 2013 channel-sharing deal. The deal was shrouded in a lack of transparency and rather shady dealings. Combined with a R33- million bonus paid to Hlaudi Motsoeneng in 2014, something is certainly starting to stink. [Triple earthquake hits Italian cities] Central Italy has been rocked by three earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 5.3 to 5.7. Abruzzo, Lazio and Marche, as well as Rome all felt the brunt of the quakes, in an area already hit by heavy snowfall. No casualties have been reported and all train services in Rome had been suspended. [Japan to simplify hi-tech toilet instructions] In what can only be described as the pinnacle of Japanese scientific industrial efficiency, the country's major hi-tech toilet barons will create a uniform set of instructions. The intention is for tourists unused to the ridiculously sophisticated thrones to avoid incorrect use of the various buttons. After all, if you are looking for noise-baffling music while conducting business and wind up spraying your unprepared cheeks with water, nobody wins. The new eight pictorial instructions should wipe all confusion away. — FEATURED ARTICLES [Parliament: Leaked 'Working document' slams SABC] [Parliament: Leaked 'Working document' slams SABC] BY Marianne Merten [The Gender Contender: Dlamini-Zuma and Mbete vie to be the woman on top] [The Gender Contender: Dlamini-Zuma and Mbete vie to be the woman on top] BY Ranjeni Munusamy [TRAINSPOTTER: Bancorp, BLF and the radioactive dust in our eyes] [TRAINSPOTTER: Bancorp, BLF and the radioactive dust in our eyes] BY Richard Poplak OPINIONISTAS [The scourge of inequality: There can be no peace or freedom while it persists] [The scourge of inequality: There can be no peace or freedom while it persists] A column by Jay Naidoo [Elections: Will coalitions rescue the system?] [Elections: Will coalitions rescue the system?] A column by Pierre de Vos [FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO A FRIEND] Copyright © 2016 Daily Maverick, All rights reserved.
