[US wags finder at Zimbabwe]( [FIRST THING With John Stupart] Tuesday, 10 September 2019 “Petra is a brilliant display of man's artistry in turning barren rock into a majestic wonder.” Edward Dawson Story of the Day [Your move, South Africa]( By Daily Maverick For too long now, the state of South Africa has been malfunctioning. It’s time for the choking apparatus to cough back into life. The truth is, South Africa doesn’t have much time left and it had better happen. Now. [Co-working Offices / Open-plan / Private Offices / Meeting Rooms / Virtual Offices / Executive Offices]( WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING [Boris blocked yet again, Parliament suspended]( Boris Johnson has had his second attempt to call a snap election soundly shot down. Monday's vote saw Johnson's hands firmly tied with additional legislation that requires the Prime Minister to seek an extension on Brexit until the end of January. For his part, Boris seemed intent on quickly negotiating a deal in Brussels, not quite the same as what British law now requires him to do. Parliament is also now suspended until mid-October. [Afghanistan peace talks 'dead](' President Donald Trump has referred to peace negotiations with the Taliban as "dead". The statement was made in the wake of a deadly attack which the militant group claimed responsibility for. One American was killed. In response, commanders in Afghanistan have indicated that an escalation of troop numbers and operations would be the response to an expected upsurge in attacks. [Trump won't debate rivals]( Donald Trump has announced that he will not be debating against any of his Republican primary candidate rivals. Trump stated on Monday that “they’re all at less than 1%. I guess it’s a publicity stunt”. Considering that the rivals are, in fact, deeply unpopular, he may well have a point. [Suspicious fires spread in Australia]( Hundreds of residents in Queensland and New South Wales have had to evacuate the area as widespread wildfires approach properties. Of the 140 reported fires, eight were deemed suspicious, with children spotted near their origin. Foul play is strongly suspected. Picture of the Day By EPA-EFE/JIJI PRESS An aerial picture shows damage after a golf driving range net fell down due strong wind generated by Typhoon Faxai in Ichihara, Chiba prefecture, Japan, 9 September 2019. In Numbers [1/3]( The portion of South Africa's food that is wasted by its people. Facts of the Day Today in 2008 the Large Hadron Collider is powered up. A "moment" and "jiffy" are both legitimate units of time.
