[High Court judgment bolsters Pravin Gordhanâs case against Public Protector](
By Pauli Van Wyk
Businessman Martin Wingate-Pearse lost in the High Court on Wednesday in a case that may not only have a dire effect on his own taxpaying purse, but will have a direct influence on any court challenges arguing that SARS had a ârogue unitâ which illegally spied on taxpayers. This includes the pending review applications by Minister of Public enterprises Pravin Gordhan emanating from Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebaneâs findings in her second adverse Gordhan report.

[Ebola in DRC now a global health emergency](
The World Health Organisation announced on Wednesday that the Ebola crisis in the DRC was now a global health emergency. The WHO expressed concern that the virus would spread beyond the DRC, thereby prompting the declaration. In doing so, the WHO explained that the classification frees up international resources and galvanises global action in fighting Ebola.
[US gives Turkey the cold F-35 shoulder](
The White House has confirmed that Turkey's continued involvement with the F-35 programme would be "impossible". The United States has kicked Ankara out of the process, potentially losing billions of dollars due to the country taking delivery of a Russian S-400 anti-aircraft system. Considering that the Russian equipment can track and gather data on the F-35's flight characteristics, the US-based reasoning is a little sounder than usual for the Trump administration.
[Fake snow could save antarctic ice sheet](
Engineering could help plug the gap caused by the ongoing climate crisis. A new study argued that the deployment of thousands of wind turbines to the West Antarctic ice sheet could pump sea water into the surface, thereby weighing down the sheet and preventing further collapse.
[House blocks weapons sales to Saudi Arabia, Trump to veto](
On Wednesday the US House of Representatives voted to support a resolution to block precision-guided weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE. In doing so, the matter now goes to the White House, where Donald Trump has promised to veto the whole affair. Human rights appeared to have disappeared from the agenda in the United States for the time being.
