The ANCâs 2007 resolution to disband the Scorpions, leading to the 2008 establishment of the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (the Hawks) by the Zuma administration, was always intended to provide a soft landing for the politically connected and the habitually corrupt. It succeeded in that mission, beyond their wildest dreams. Thatâs why, for South Africa to have any chance of survival, it needs to be disbanded. Now.

[Earthquakes in Indonesia, Japan](
A series of earthquakes have been recorded in Asia, with no tsunami just yet. Eastern Japan was hit by an estimated 5.2 magnitude earthquake, with Indonesia now experiencing a 7.5 quake. No casualties have been reported as yet.
[Turkey's opposition wins Istanbul mayoral election](
Turkish opposition Republican People's Party has won Istanbul's mayorship, striking a blow against Erdogan's AK Party. Erdogan congratulated Ekrem Imamoglou on the win. The election was a re-run of an annulled one in March, prompted by the AK Party itself. This time, the opposition garnered significantly more votes. Be careful what you wish for, in other words.
[Army chief killed in failed Ethiopian coup](
An attempted coup in Ethiopia has been suppressed. Two separate attacks by rogue military officers left the country's Army Chief of Staff dead and three others killed. A senior officer [attempted to seize control]( of Amhara, 500km away from Addis Ababa. The US Embassy had also Tweeted reports of gunfire in the capital itself.
[Houthi rebels strike Saudi airport](
Yemen's Houthi militants are believed to have attacked Abha airport in Saudi Arabia, killing one person and wounding seven others. Authorities claimed that a drone had struck the airport parking lot, raising even larger concerns over increasing Houthi capability in carrying out long-range attacks.
