[FIRST THING With John Stupart](
Thursday, 6 June 2019
"My God, we're coming in at the right spot, but look at it! No shingle, no wall, no shell holes, no cover. Nothing!"
Lieutenant Edward Tidrick, Boat 2, Able Company, 116th Infantry, 29th Division. Omaha. 6 June 1944.

[A tangled web, ANC edition: The Reserve Bank and âquantity easingâ mess reveals a party in deep internal crisis](
By Stephen Grootes
The very public slapping down of Ace Magashule by, among others, Tito Mboweni and Enoch Godongwana is yet another expression of just how comprehensively the ANC is divided. You know things are bad when so many in the party line up to display contempt for the person of the secretary-general, a nigh-impossible feat during Gwede Mantasheâs time.

[One thousand measles cases in US](
The greatest number of measles cases since 1992 have been recorded. According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, 41 new cases in May brought the total number of those affected by measles to 1,0001. Anti-vaxxer idiocy taking a firm grip, then.
[Sudanese military offers talks after massacre](
Just two days after murdering dozens of civilians, Sudan's military government has offered to have talks with opposition groups. The latter declined, on account of, well, the murders. Medical personnel in Khartoum revealed that they had traced at least 108 dead at the hands of the military. Saudi Arabia, which supports the Sudanese Transitional Military Council, has called for "more dialogue".
[Pentagon looks to Africa for rare earths](
The United States Department of Defence has looked to Malawi to help supply rare earth metals. The move was a clear attempt to sidestep away from its dependency on China, a clear weak point in the ongoing Trump-induced global trade war. The Pentagon had also held talks with Burundi. Diversification is clearly the message of the day.
[YouTube clamps down on hate speech](
Videos promoting racial superiority, segregation and discrimination will face heavy censorship on YouTube. The video streaming giant stated on Wednesday that it would be ratcheting up its efforts against hate speech following a vociferous, collective protest by Google employees.
