[Daily Maverick]( Saturday, 26 January 2019 [More Zapiro Cartoons]( [A Free Press Costs Money]( It’s sad but true. Nothing comes for free. Except for things that nobody wants or needs; like ‘well-meaning’ advice from strangers or an Agang t-shirt. Having a free press though – that’s needed and something everyone should want. 2018 saw the press being attacked globally – simply for doing their jobs. More than 250 journalists were imprisoned around the world and 34 were murdered. Widely respected journalists have been called ‘fake news’ and South Africa hasn’t been immune to any of this. Daily Maverick journalists have inadvertently drawn attention to themselves for doing their jobs so incredibly well that they’ve exposed criminals and corruption under many political rocks in the country. They’ve paid the price, with intimidation, harassment and death threats. But that’s the job. And we need to pay them for it. In a crucial election year, we don’t want to erect a paywall. We think that our ‘free press’ should be ‘free for all’ - not just for those who can afford it. How can we hold the news hostage from our readers when our journalists have worked so hard to uncover it? In a country like South Africa, with neighbouring countries suffering, we simply can’t and won’t. So, our solution was to create Maverick Insider: our membership platform. Maverick Insider [membership contributions]( have allowed us to hire two new journalists, eight paid interns and two new support staff - with more new hires coming. They help pay for the on-going investigations and those that have achieved huge impact and change because contributions ensure that Zapiro, Scorpio and Daily Maverick articles remain free for everyone. Chances are that if you’re reading this, you care about and understand the challenge that we’re facing. If you’d like to translate that into action, you can sign up to become a [Maverick Insider](today. In exchange, we’ll keep doing the digging, reporting and investigating. We also promise to deliver a rewarding membership experience with great benefits to supplement doing a great, good thing.
