Leo Tolstoy
Story of the Day
[Crime stats from Hell â brought to you by years of instability, political pliancy and the SAPSâs internecine battles](
By Marianne Merten
With an official murder rate of 57 South Africans killed every day â and murder is a yardstick for crime generally â Police Minister Bheki Cele on Tuesday did something politicians usually donât: a straight admission that police had âdropped the ballâ. That comes against the backdrop of the Cabinet security cluster of police, state security and defence not having meet for two years, and 250 vacancies in the Hawks, the elite investigating directorate. After too many years of neglect, and sometimes plain sabotage, the chickens are coming home to roost.

Hurricane Florence is set to damage North Carolina over the next two days. Florence is deemed to be the region's most powerful hurricane in three decades and thousands of Americans living in its path have already evacuated.
[EFF warn of land seizure campaign](
EFF leader Julius Malema has told the AFP that his party would ramp up the seizure of unoccupied land. Huffing the fumes of election fever next year, Malema stated that poor, young South Africans are fed up with the ANC. He said:"It's a completely new generation running out of patience."
[Spain demolishes Croatia 6-0](
World Cup runners-up Croatia looked anything but their tournament selves on Tuesday. The Spanish squad defeated their rivals 6-0 in a Nationals League match, led by a superb effort by Marco Asensio. When you take into account that this squad managed the score without the likes of Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta and David Silva, it might be time to start betting on Spain for the 2022 World Cup.
[Russia launches largest war games in history](
On Tuesday Russia began its "Vostok-2018" war games in eastern Russia. In co-operation with Chinese military forces, the show of force sends a giant, not-so-subtle message to NATO powers and the United States. As Syrian and Russian forces tighten the noose on Idlib in Syria, the massive, 300,000 soldier manoeuvre is a flashback to the Cold War's era of sabre-rattling.
