Story of the Day
[Jonas Makwakwaâs swift rise to power, and his abuse of it](
By Pauli Van Wyk
The testimony of witnesses on Wednesday was all about how Tom Moyane treated SARS like a concentration camp. His right-hand man Jonas Makwakwa, however, stole the show on Thursday: Witnesses painted a picture of a mid-level manager who wormed himself into a top job while grabbing hold of operational power in order to interfere in the affairs of high-profile taxpayers. Day 3 of the Commission of Inquiry into SARS was no less of a shock than Day 2.

While You Were Sleeping
[Newsroom shooting causes multiple fatalities](
A shooting on Thursday in the Capital Gazette offices has killed at least five staff members. Eyewitness reports indicate that a lone gunman shot through the office entrance's glass door and began firing on employees. Located in Annapolis, US, the CapGaz shooting comes just a day after right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos called for conservatives to assassinate "hostile" reporters. This is America in 2018, apparently.
[Knockout stages on the horizon for Top 16](
It's a knockout! Save for the agony of Senegal being booted out because they had more yellow cards than Japan, the final round of group fixtures were pretty uneventful. It's knockout time - and we've got a team-by-team overview of how the next few days are going to play out. You might also have nodded off during the game, but Belgium beat England. Not before a fan opted to come to the stadium in blackface, though.
[Semenya back on track despite IAAF](
Caster Semenya will be running in Paris at the Diamond League seventh leg. Currently unbeaten this season in the 800m, Semenya had taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge what appeared to be deeply racist IAAF rules on testosterone that seemed to target her specifically.
[Tourists stranded in Bali as volcano erupts](
Thousands of tourists were left without flights and locals without a plan as a volcanic eruption on the resort island occurred on Thursday evening. By Friday morning the international airport had been closed, cancelling 450 flights as volcanic ash clouded the nearby airspace. At present no threat is expected for locals, as a 4km no-go zone has been established around the smoking Mount Agung volcano.
