The program, however, [falls short](–individual recipients won’t qualify if they have assets that exceed $2,000 in value, $3,000 for a couple. These thresholds have not changed since [1989]( and are unfair to individuals and families alike! To remedy this, bipartisan legislation, the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act, has been introduced in Congress. This legislation would increase the asset limit from $2,000 to $10,000 for an individual and $3,000 to $20,000 for a couple, and it would exclude retirement savings from the countable assets.
