Toxic lead continues to contaminate our drinking water and harm our kids. We know that lead is dangerous for children. It harms the way our kids grow, learn and behave -- but you can still find lead in the plumbing, fixtures and water fountains of schools across America. The EPA is only accepting public comments on the issue for a few more days. [Tell the EPA to stop lead contamination of schools’ water.]( [SIGN NOW]( Here's the email we previously sent: --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, Even at low levels, lead harms the way our kids grow, learn and behave. Yet lead has been contaminating drinking water in communities across America. Fortunately, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently proposed a 10-year deadline for most water utilities to fully replace lead service lines -- the toxic pipes that still bring water to roughly 9 million homes. But when it comes to ensuring safe water for our kids at school, the EPA still has some homework to do. [Tell the EPA to stop lead contamination of schools’ water.]( [SIGN NOW]( Replacing lead service lines is a vital step for protecting drinking water at home, but for most of our schools, contamination of water comes from lead in plumbing, fountains or faucets already in the school building. That’s why we’re urging the EPA to also require schools to install water stations with lead filters and to set a 1 part per billion limit on lead in school drinking water, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It’s imperative that we make our voices heard now, before the public comments period ends. [Tell the EPA: Make schools’ drinking water safe.]( [SIGN NOW]( Lead-tainted water has irreparably damaged communities across the U.S. It’s estimated that over 170 million Americans today were exposed to high levels of lead in early childhood. The negative effects of lead contamination are staggering: - Children may experience brain damage resulting in IQ loss, learning disabilities and behavioral problems. Kids face an even greater risk because their rapidly growing bodies absorb lead more quickly and efficiently than adults. - Adults exposed to lead can suffer from cardiovascular issues, increased blood pressure and decreased kidney function. - As of 2015, it was estimated that lead exposure was responsible for the loss of 824,097,690 IQ points population-wide. Adults and kids alike deserve safe drinking water wherever they go. That’s why we need the EPA to require replacement of lead pipes and installing filters on drinking water taps at school. We can protect future generations by urging the EPA to take these steps. It’s important that we act before the public comments period ends on February 5. [Tell the EPA to get the lead out.]( Thank you for helping to protect our communities.
