Friend, imagine this: Every [week](, each of us could ingest microplastics equivalent to the size of a credit card. These microplastics are present in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we consume. This is a wake-up call to the pervasive nature of plastic pollution in our daily lives. [Sign the petition: Ban single-use plastics!]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( We are under siege. A staggering [80% of marine debris]( originates from land-based sources, primarily from single-use plastics and packaging. Plastics from landfills can also break down into tiny toxic particles, contaminate the soil and waterways, and enter the food chain. The good news is that change is possible. Alternatives to single-use plastics are not only available but are proving to be effective. This is more than an environmental issue – it's about our health and the legacy we leave for future generations. It’s time to move on from single-use plastics. [Sign the petition: Ban single-use plastics!]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Thanks for all you do, Mayra Souza, Daily Kos P.S. Below is an email we sent out earlier: --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, [sign the petition: Ban single-use plastics!]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( The United States generates enough plastic waste to [fill a football stadium]( EVERY DAY. That is absurd and hazardous! Only 8% of that plastic is recycled, leaving the rest to be landfilled, incinerated, or littered. Nearly half of U.S. plastic waste comes from single-use products and packaging. The pollution does not stop there–there’s even plastic in our food. Tiny fragments of plastic, called microplastics, are accumulating in the soil where our food is grown and in the seafood we eat from our oceans. Plastics, including single-use, break down and can result in humans potentially ingesting the equivalent of a [credit card's worth of microplastics]( every week. And it gets worse still: Plastics are a fossil fuel product, meaning plastic production continues to exacerbate our already dire climate crisis. It’s past time for immediate action. Join us in urging Congress to enact a nationwide ban on single-use plastics. This is not just an environmental issue – it's a matter of public health and protecting our future generations.
