Friend, I've worked at Daily Kos for more than 10 years, and it's still difficult to explain exactly what we do here because Daily Kos is so different from anything else. Daily Kos is one part news outlet and one part advocacy organization. There are people who only know us through our [news work](, coming to us through social media or maybe by having discovered and bookmarked our site years ago. There are also people who only know us through our [advocacy](, primarily interacting with us and our work through emails (like this one!). The good thing about being both a news outlet and advocacy group is that we can marry information and action together in a way no one else can. You can read about GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville's [unprecedented obstruction]( of nominees for national security positions across government, and then contact your senators about breaking Tuberville's blockade immediately after. The bad thing about being both a news outlet and advocacy group is that both the news media and advocacy organizations are getting absolutely hammered right now. For news outlets, this is part of a [decade-and-a-half-long trend]( that began during the Great Recession, accelerated during the pandemic and continues as Big Tech vacuums up online ad dollars that once supported news outlets big and small. At the same time, a decline in progressive small donations is hitting [advocacy groups]( where it hurts. [Daily Kos is not immune to forces bearing down on news outlets or advocacy groups. So far, we have survived thanks to donations from average folks like you—people giving just a few bucks at a time to support our work and keep it free to the public, with no paywalls. That's why I'm asking you to start a $5 monthly recurring donation right now. It's the most powerful thing you can do to support our work.]( [Can't donate monthly or already give monthly? Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
