Friend, bad news: our freedom to vote is under attack. An appeals court of Trump-appointed judges [eviscerated]( Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. If this gets upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, it could be devastating. In a substantial break with 50 years of precedent, the [judges ruled that]( only the U.S. Attorney General — not individual victims of discrimination or even longstanding civil rights groups like the NAACP — can sue states or localities that implement racially biased voting procedures. We can't expect the Supreme Court to do the right thing. Congress must feel the heat, and take action immediately to protect our freedom to vote. Fortunately, there is a bill to do just that. [Sign and send the petition: Pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Amendment Act]( [Sign and send the petition]( This latest attack on our freedom to vote is nothing new. Ten years ago, the Supreme Court's [Shelby County decision]( gutted Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act—opening the floodgates to a wave of restrictive voting bills, extreme gerrymandering, voter roll purges and polling location closures targeting voters of color. We need to fight back by putting pressure on Congress. The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would [modernize and restore]( the full protections of the VRA. Coupled with the Freedom to Vote Act, the legislation will ensure that every eligible American—from Latino voters in California, to American Indian voters in South Dakota, to Black voters in Georgia—has access to the ballot box and protection against anti-democratic attacks in state legislatures across the nation. The Voting Rights Act has long enjoyed bipartisan support—having been reauthorized even under Republican Presidents Ronald Reagan & George W. Bush. Members of Congress must fulfill their obligation to protect the freedom to vote by enacting legislation that will fully restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act.
