Friend, with every passing day we are seeing more and more heartache coming out of Hawai'i. Many of the survivors of the catastrophic wildfires fled their homes with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. Far too many have lost everything; their homes and their employment. It's been a week since we first emailed asking for you to support local organizations that are working around the clock to provide emergency assistance to those that have been affected by the wildfires that devastated Maui. Here is an update from one of our partners on the ground, reporting back on how donations are being used: I just wanted to send our heartfelt thanks to Daily Kos for setting up an ActBlue Charities fundraiser for Aina Momona. The money you raised for us has been deployed directly into West Maui. We sent 20 laptops to Maui today to be used for families to apply for relief and much needed protective gear. This weekend we sent generators over for kupuna (elders) who have been living under tarps since this nightmare began. We're just so grateful. You have no idea how critical having flexibility has been. In addition to filling immediate needs, we're also giving money directly to families who have lost everything. Thanks to campaigns like yours, we are one of the only organizations with immediate funds to fill these critical needs. In these terrible times, we have been so grateful to be able help people feel seen and supported. Far too many people have lost everything. Unfortunately, like most natural disasters of this magnitude, it will take months, even years, to rebuild what has been lost. [Now more than ever your support is needed. Please donate $5 today to the Maui Community Power Recovery Fund and the Maui Food Bank. 100% of your contribution will go directly to providing critical aid to the people of Hawai'i.]( [DONATE](
Thank you for all you do,
Amanda McKay, Daily Kos P.S. Please read the email below to learn about the relief organizations your donations are supporting and the hard work they are doing. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, catastrophic wildfires in Hawai'i have left thousands homeless and claimed dozens of lives, particularly on the island of Maui. Lahaina, which was once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom and has significant historic and cultural importance to the KÄnaka Maoli Indigenous Hawaiian people, has been completely destroyed. [Please contribute $5, or whatever you can, to support organizations working around the clock to provide emergency housing and relief services to displaced families and climate refugees across Maui.]( [DONATE](
Daily Kos has partnered with the Maui Community Power Recovery Fund to raise money to help disaster relief and recovery efforts. The organization supports immediate relief efforts to house, feed and support displaced families, and dedicates resources for long-term efforts to rebuild and advance structural change in Maui and Hawaiâi. It includes:
- Our Hawaiâi is organizing a grassroots political movement to create a Hawaiâi that puts local working kamaâÄina and KÄnaka Maoli families first. - âÄina Momona is a community organization dedicated to achieving environmental health and sustainability through social justice and restoring Hawaiian sovereignty. - Hawaiâi Funder Hui partners community organizations with philanthropists to deliver equitable, community-led funding of non-profits in Hawaiâi. - KÄkoÊ»o Maui is a Native Hawaiian led relief effort directing 100% of funds to Maui organizations, hosted by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement which enhances the cultural, economic, political, and community development of Native Hawaiians. - Onipaâa Maui works to ensure that local elected officials work on behalf of Mauiâs people and environment, not special interest lobbies.
