Friend, [sign the petition to Congress: Pass the Grand Canyon National Monument Act to protect the land, water, and people from uranium mining.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Uranium mining, an ongoing practice for over 75 years, poses a significant threat to our environment and the health of our Tribal communities. Multinational mining conglomerates have established thousands of uranium mines and mills in the Grand Canyon area and the surrounding Colorado Plateau, representing most uranium mining in the United States. The [consequences]( of this mining are far-reaching and alarming. Nearly one in five uranium mines exist within six miles of a Native American reservation, and more than three-quarters are within 50 miles of a reservation. This proximity has resulted in a toxic legacy on the land and Tribal communities. Pregnant people and newborn babies in this region exhibit higher levels of uranium in their bodies than people in other parts of the country. More than a quarter of Navajo Nation residents participating in one study recently tested positive for high levels of uranium. [Sign the petition to Congress: Pass the Grand Canyon National Monument Act to protect the land, water, and people from uranium mining.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Moreover, uranium mining threatens the [Colorado River](, a vital water source for over 40 million people in seven states and a lifeline for more than 1.8 million acres of agricultural land. Toxic uranium mineral production could contaminate this essential water source, jeopardizing drinking water, fishing, hunting, and agriculture. The [Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument Act](, introduced in both the U.S. House and Senate, aims to protect the invaluable sacred and natural resources of the Grand Canyon region, manage hunting and grazing uses, and establish a 12-member tribal commission to ensure tribal co-stewardship. This bill is the solution we need to protect Native lands. The Grand Canyon is not just a natural wonder; it is home to hundreds of thousands of acres of sacred land for Tribes and a place where thousands reconnect to the natural world. By supporting and passing the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument Act, we can ensure the protection of those lands, the health of our people, and the preservation of our natural resources for generations to come.
