Friend, Ron DeSantis is [getting defensive]( about the new Florida history standards that outrageously suggest Black people "benefited" from slavery. Vice President Kamala Harris, on a recent visit to Florida, [accused DeSantis]( of wanting to "replace history with lies" and "push propaganda to our children." The NAACP has issued a travel advisory for Florida, and even some Republicans have opposed the new curriculum. This [revisionist history of slavery]( is not new, and has been used for the last 150 years to hold back our country. We cannot let Florida get away with teaching children this false and white supremacist version of our history today. [Sign the petition: Gov. Ron DeSantis cannot rewrite Black history.]( [Sign the petition]( Keep fighting, Paul Hogarth, Daily Kos P.S. My colleague Mayra Souza wrote the following email below on this petition. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, Florida has recently approved a new curriculum that paints a [misleading picture of slavery](, suggesting that some Black people "benefited" from it by 'learning useful skills." This narrative not only distorts historical facts but also disrespects the experiences of those who suffered under the brutal system of slavery. [Sign the petition: Ron DeSantis cannot rewrite Black history.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( The [Florida Education Association](, a statewide teachers' union, has called the new standards "a disservice to Florida's students and are a big step backward for a state that has required teaching African American history since 1994." The new curriculum is not only a disservice to the students of Florida but also a threat to the integrity of our nation's education system. It is deeply offensive, reducing the horrific experience of slavery to a misguided notion of "benefit." It's crucial that we teach our children the truth about our history, including the harsh realities of slavery, to ensure that they grow up with a clear understanding of our past and its impact on our present. Our children's education is vital. It shapes their understanding of the world and their place in it. We must protect it from those seeking to distort it with their own political agendas.
