Friend, anti-abortion groups continue to look for ways to attack abortion access and strip away our bodily autonomy. Now, they are grasping at a 150-year-old law, the Comstock Act, that could effectively lead to a nationwide abortion ban. [Sign the petition: Congress must repeal the Comstock Act.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( As GOP-backed cases seeking to eliminate FDA approval of the medication abortion drug mifepristone proceeds through the courts, and other cases to further restrict access are lined up behind it, the Comstock Act is being cited in their arguments. The same law that led to the prosecution and imprisonment of people providing and seeking healthcare access in the 1870s could still be used in the 2020s to derail our rights to reproductive freedom. The Comstock Act must be immediately repealed. [Sign the petition: Congress must repeal the Comstock Act.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Thanks for all you do, Erin Tulley, Daily Kos P.S. Below is an email we sent out earlier urging Congress to repeal the Comstock Act: --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, the Comstock Act has become a weapon in the ongoing struggle over reproductive rights in the United States. But Congress can diffuse this now. [Sign the petition: Congress must repeal the Comstock Act.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( The Comstock Act is a 150-year-old federal law that threatens medication abortion access on the basis of archaic principles. It has arisen once again as a GOP attack tool. A Trump-appointed judge has used the dormant law to [restrict access]( to leading abortion drug mifepristone. For over 20 years, people have used mifepristone to safely and effectively end their pregnancies. In fact, studies have shown mifepristone is safer than Tylenol. Yet, the Comstock Act is being used in an attempt to outlaw the mailing of the medication entirely–just one more angle the GOP is taking to strip bodily autonomy. Congress can, and must, repeal the Comstock Act and not give the GOP an inch in their attempts to ban abortion. Repealing it would not only protect reproductive rights but also demonstrate an unwavering commitment to reproductive health and autonomy. [Add your name to tell Congress to immediately begin working to repeal the Comstock Act.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Thanks for all you do, Erin Tulley, Daily Kos Before you leave, can you do one more thing? 2023 has been a hard financial year for Daily Kos.
