Friend, state officials in Montana exiled one of the state’s only transgender lawmakers, Zooey

Friend, state officials in Montana exiled one of the state’s only transgender lawmakers, Zooey Zephyr, for fighting for the rights of LGBTQ+ youth. [Sign the petition: Denounce fascism in state governments.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( The Montana legislature, like that of several other red states, introduced legislation that would prohibit hormone treatments and surgical care for transgender minors. Having championed for LGBTQ+ rights and the rights of vulnerable communities on the campaign trail, Zephyr told Montana lawmakers that passing the bill would be “tantamount to torture” and would result in “blood on your hands” for lawmakers who approved it. And that was it. That was enough for GOP lawmakers in the state to wield their power to silence yet another Democrat who was voted in by the people (Zephyr won her race with about [80%]( of the vote). [Sign the petition: Denounce fascism in state governments.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( In a speech on the House floor, Zephyr [notes](, "When the speaker asks me to apologize on behalf of decorum, what he is really asking me to do is be silent when my community is facing bills that get us killed. He’s asking me to be complicit in this legislature's eradication of our community.” Across the country, people are labeling the Montana GOP’s actions as anti-democratic–and we agree, but it is also so much more than that. This is fascism. Silencing your opposition, the erasure of entire communities, and the persistent theme of distorting the truth are all facets of fascist and authoritarian regimes. When previously ousted Tennessee Rep. Justin Jones said that if it could happen there it could happen anywhere, he rang the alarm on a growing trend that would soon become synonymous with the GOP.
