Friend, when we vote, every vote should count equally. And when those votes count, they should be of the American people, not the Electoral College. [Sign the petition: Elect the president by national popular vote.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Al Gore and Hillary Clinton both won the popular vote for president. But they were never elected president because of the Electoral College. That doesn’t make sense, right? Whoever wins the most votes nationwide should be elected President of the United States. States have already reconsidered or are reconsidering their positions, aligning with a national popular vote over the current archaic system that ignores voters. Join us in urging states to affirm the National Popular Vote bill that would guarantee the presidency to the candidate who receives the most votes nationally. [Sign the petition: Elect the president by national popular vote.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Thanks for all you do, Erin Tulley, Daily Kos P.S. Below is an email we sent out earlier calling for the president to be elected by a national popular vote: --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, the fundamental principle of democracy is that each vote should carry equal weight, and the winner should be the candidate with the most votes. However, in the current Electoral College system, certain states receive an unfair advantage, leaving many Americans voiceless. [Sign the petition: Elect the president by national popular vote.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is an agreement among several US states and DC to award their electoral votes to the candidate with the most popular votes. The compact will go into effect if states with a total of 270 electoral votes join. If enough states join, we can elect the president by national popular vote. Currently, 15 states and DC with 195 electoral votes have joined, and Michigan and Minnesota (which are both considering) could add up to 220 electoral votes. The goal is to make the presidential election reflective of the will of the people, rather than a strategic battle to win select states. Other states must also join the compact for the candidate with the most votes to win, as is required in any democracy.
