Friend, year after year, Republicans shriek about Social Security being in crisis. For them, the only solutions require cutting benefits for working people who’ve paid into the program for our entire lives. They are determined to force Americans to work until we're broken or dead. Thankfully, progressive Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and Democratic Reps. Jan Schakowsky and Val Hoyle have a much more [reasonable solution](: Protect and expand Social Security by requiring the wealthiest people in America to pay their fair share. [Sign and send a petition to Congress: Pass the Social Security Expansion Act of 2023.]( [SIGN AND SEND]( Let's set the record straight: Social Security has a [$2.85 trillion surplus]( in its trust fund and can pay every promised benefit to every eligible American until the year 2035. Republicans rely on fearmongering because the facts don't support their solutions. We can't allow them to continue spreading misinformation. The Social Security Expansion Act of 2023 would increase benefits and ensure Social Security is fully funded for the next 75 years by: - Requiring the wealthiest American households to pay their fair share of taxes. Over 93 percent of households would not see their taxes go up by one penny. - Increasing Social Security benefits across-the-board for current and new beneficiaries. - Increasing Cost-Of-Living-Adjustments (COLAs) for seniors who spend a disproportionate amount of their income on health care and prescription drugs. - Restoring student benefits up to age 22 for children of disabled or deceased workers, if the child is a full-time student, and more. Social Security is one of the most popular and successful government programs in the history of our country because it works. Before it was created in 1935, about half of our nation’s seniors were living in poverty. Today, the senior poverty rate is 10.3 percent. We cannot go backwards.
