Friend, a larger U.S. House chamber would more equitably represent the American people. [Sign the petition: Make Congress closer to the people. Grow the House chamber.]( [Sign the petition](
The House didnât always have a fixed number of members. Until 1929, when Congress capped the number at 435, it grew as the U.S. population grew. And while the Senate must have two senators per state, the Constitution says nothing about how big the House chamber must beâonly that each state is allocated a proportional number by population. Congress can vote to change this at any time. Currently, congressional districts are too large for representatives to have meaningful connections with their constituents.. Making districts smaller would make it easier for members to be exposed to more points of view and better represent their districts. And making the House bigger means more voting power, as each voter has a greater chance of influencing the outcome of an election than they would in a larger district. Itâs time Congress grows the U.S. House and brings representatives closer to the people they are elected to represent. [Sign the petition: Make Congress closer to the people. Friend, [sign the petition: Make Congress closer to the people. Grow the House of Representatives.]( [Sign the petition](
The size of the House of Representatives [has not grown]( since [1929](, and Congress froze the number of members at 435. Meanwhile, the U.S. population has [nearly quadrupled](. That means your member of Congress represents a lot more people, which makes it more difficult for everyday citizens to have their voices heard. Moreover, the population growth has not been evenâwith disparities having a [greater effect]( on larger, more diverse states. A larger House chamber would more equitably represent its constitutional mandate. [Sign if you agree: A Congress stuck at 435 members since 1912 is out of touch.]( [Sign the petition](
Increasing the number of House seats would allow a higher proportion of districts where communities of color and other diverse regional interests can elect their preferred candidates. Congress could then more effectively address issues like housing, jobs and immigration. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Oregon) has [introduced a bill]( that would increase the number of U.S. Representatives to 585 after the 2030 U.S. Census. It is a very modest but necessary measure to bring Congress closer to the people and make us a more perfect union. [Sign the petition: Grow the U.S. House chamber.]( [Sign the petition](
Our message to Congress:
A larger House chamber would more equitably represent its constitutional mandate, by making members of Congress closer to the people. Please pass H.R. 622, the REAL House Act to increase the number of U.S. representatives to 585 after the next U.S. Census. Keep fighting,
