Friend, as the oldest democracy in the world, we cannot sit idly by as Republican legislatures all across the country continue to pass restrictive voting laws. During the last congressional session, Democrats introduced the John Lewis Freedom to Vote Act, but the bill was threatened with a filibuster from Senate Republicans. It’s time for Democrats to finish the job, reintroduce the Freedom to Vote Act, and expand the right to vote for millions of people. Our democracy is on the line. Democrats must protect the right to vote for all eligible Americans, once and for all. [Sign and send the petition to Democrats: Bring back the Freedom to Vote Act]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( Yours in the struggle, Marquese Averett, Daily Kos P.S. Please see my colleague’s previous message about reintroducing the Freedom to Vote Act. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, [sign and send the petition to Congress: Bring back the Freedom to Vote Act!]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( House Democrats made history by [passing]( the For the People Act in 2019–the most comprehensive set of democracy reforms passed in a generation. It provided for easier voter registration, more early voting, campaign finance reform, an end to gerrymandering, and rooting out corruption in Washington. That historic legislation was stalled, filibustered, reintroduced, and diluted, but another strong bill remained: The John R. Lewis [Freedom to Vote Act](. The Freedom to Vote Act passed quickly in the Dem-controlled House but was again DOA in the then GOP-led Senate. Control of congressional chambers has switched, but our Democratic leaders owe voters the same fervor and willingness we show every time we turn out to vote, in spite of the odds. They owe us federal voting rights protections. [Sign and send the petition: Democrats in Congress must reintroduce the Freedom to Vote Act.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( Donald Trump's Big Lie about the 2020 election has been used as justification for a violent coup attempt on Capitol Hill and a state-by-state attack on voting rights. Far-right elected leaders are further tightening restrictions on voting and access to the ballot box. In addition to filing hundreds of voter suppression bills, ultra conservative officials have sown distrust in our electoral processes–voting, vote counting, poll workers, absentee voting, drop boxes, and more. Despite all their chicanery, rightwing traitors have largely failed to sabotage our government due to voters like you. Joe Biden remains our duly elected president, the so-called red tsunami failed to materialize in 2022, and Democrats maintain control of the Senate. Our values, legislative agenda, civil rights, and our entire democratic experiment depend on broad access to voting. They depend on our elected leaders not backing down from a challenge and finding the path to victory.
