Friend, . The countdown to the first judicial nominations meetings of the Senate Judiciary Committee

Friend, [sign the petition to Senate Democratic leadership: Don’t let Republicans block district court nominees](. [SIGN THE PETITION]( The countdown to the first judicial nominations meetings of the Senate Judiciary Committee is on! On January 25 and 26, senators are expected to meet for hearings and the first round of committee votes for Biden’s nominees, including many who were renominated this year. This is a strong start for the new true Democratic majority in the Senate, but if our senators want to be as effective as possible, they must remove all barriers to processing Biden’s judicial nominees, including blue slips. Blue slips represent an archaic tradition in the Senate that only allows a judicial nominee to proceed if senators from their home state sign off on the nomination. This means even with a Democratic majority, Republicans can block any nominee from their own state just by refusing to return a piece of paper. [Blue slips are an outdated, absurd practice. Read on for more information about blue slips and the judicial nominations process. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, [sign the petition to Senate Democratic leadership: Don’t let Republicans block district court nominees](. [SIGN THE PETITION]( For decades, the U.S. Senate has followed an archaic custom to consider federal judicial nominees: [blue slips](. Under this practice, both U.S. senators in the home state with a judicial opening must return a piece of paper (the literal blue slip) giving their approval of a nominee before the nomination can move forward. While not as widely known as the filibuster, the blue slip process still stands in the way of progress and has been weaponized by Republicans, particularly to keep Black and brown nominees and civil rights lawyers from the federal bench. We cannot let those same Republicans continue to stymie President Biden’s commitment to filling our courts with judges dedicated to equal justice for all. [Sign the petition to Senate Democratic leadership: Don’t let Republicans block district court nominees.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Our U.S. senators made outstanding progress on confirming President Biden’s judicial nominees during the first two years of his administration. However, Republicans in key Southern states where district courts are the battleground for countless human rights cases have blocked our progress. Thankfully, blue slips aren’t actually a requirement of Senate judicial business. Now that Democrats have a true majority in the Senate, there’s no need to give Republicans veto power over nominees any longer. In fact, Republicans steamrolled over Democrats’ objections to Trump’s extremist nominees for four years, proving that blue slips are simply obsolete and outdated. [Sign the petition to Senate Democratic leadership: Do away with blue slips once and for all!]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( In solidarity, Sarah Hogg, Daily Kos Daily Kos Relies on Readers Like You We don't have billionaire backers like some right-wing media outlets.
