Friend, . The new session of Congress began with absurdity as far-right Republicans fought even more

Friend, [sign and send a petition to Congress: Oppose any attempts to weaken the Office of Congressional Ethics](. [SIGN AND SEND]( The new session of Congress began with absurdity as far-right Republicans fought even more extremist Republicans over who will become Speaker of the House of Representatives. This clown show cannot distract us from the danger of a Republican-controlled House. They will waste no time cutting crucial watchdog programs that keep members of Congress in check, including the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE). Republicans are aiming to take two primary actions to derail the OCE: impose term limits that would remove three longstanding Democrats from the OCE and defund the office so it can’t hire staff or change compensation. This means that any future investigations into unethical Republicans—like George Santos, for example—could come to a grinding halt. We can’t let that happen. [Sign and send a petition to Congress: Oppose any attempts to weaken the Office of Congressional Ethics.]( [SIGN AND SEND]( In solidarity, Sarah Hogg, Daily Kos P.S. Below, you can find an email with more information about Republican efforts to derail the OCE. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, when MAGA Republicans officially take control of the House of Representatives, one of their very first acts will be to [gut]( the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE)—the bipartisan watchdog that helps monitor and report on ethics issues involving members of Congress and staff. [Sign and send a petition to Congress: Oppose any attempts to weaken the Office of Congressional Ethics.]( [SIGN AND SEND]( The OCE investigates violations of any law, rule, regulation, or standard of conduct by members, officers, and employees of the House of Representatives. It is tasked with conducting a preliminary investigation and making recommendations to the House Ethics Committee on whether to investigate further. For example, any inquiry into George Santos' willful, and possibly illegal, deception, would likely go though this office. The House Republican Rules package currently has two harmful provisions designed to gut the only independent ethics watchdog in Congress. First, it creates arbitrary term limits that’d essentially remove three long-standing Democrats from OCE. Second, House Republicans want to effectively defund the OCE so it can’t hire new staff or change their compensation. These changes would undermine, demoralize, and be a serious impediment to stopping corruption in Congress. As a result, everyday Americans would pay the price. Members of Congress should not be able to derail an investigation to avoid accountability for their unethical actions. Republicans tried this nonsense back in 2017. We were able to stop it with quick, furious backlash. We only have a short window to stop them again.
