Gov. Hochul has two weeks to name her nominee from a list of seven candidates provided by the Commission on Judicial Nomination. Three of those sevenâAbbe Gluck, Edwina Richardson-Mendelson, and Corey Stoughtonâare [excellent candidates]( with a proven track record of fighting for vulnerable New Yorkers. We need a Chief Judge who will help right the courtâs recent record of undermining marginalized communities. Please take a moment to urge Gov. In August, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore [stepped down]( from the New York Court of Appeals, the stateâs highest and most powerful court. Since her resignation announcement in July, [advocates]( have called on New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to replace DiFiore with an advocate who will fight for equal justice. That time has come. In late November, the Commission on Judicial Nomination presented Gov. Hochul with a list of seven candidates for Chief Judge, including three with outstanding records who would lead the Court of Appeals with a commitment to protect the rights of all New Yorkers: Abbe Gluck, Edwina Richardson-Mendelson, and Corey Stoughton. [Sign and send the petition to Gov. Kathy Hochul: Nominate Abbe Gluck, Edwina Richardson-Mendelson, or Corey Stoughton to serve as Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION](
Abbe Gluck is a renowned law professor, litigator, and public servant and is widely recognized as a leading voice on health law, federalism, and state courts. She was the lead attorney on the Biden administrationâs COVID-19 Response Team and is currently a professor at Yale Law School and Yale Medical School. Edwina Richardson-Mendelson has spent more than 20 years as a judge and administrator and has deep experience navigating the challenges of New Yorkâs court system. She is the Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for Justice Initiatives, Judge of the Court of Claims, and Acting Justice of the New York Supreme Court. Corey Stoughton has dedicated her entire career to civil and human rights. She has advocated for marginalized communities in her time with the Legal Aid Society, the U.S. Department of Justiceâs Civil Rights Division, and the New York Civil Liberties Union. As the U.S. Supreme Court grows more corrupt each day and we continue to claw the federal judiciary back from Donald Trumpâs extremist takeover of the bench, our state courts must be a refuge for justice. However, under former Chief Judge DiFioreâs supervision, the Court of Appeals took an alarming turn, issuing opinions that undermined democracy, harmed immigrants, tenants, and workers, and impacted environmental protections. As a New Yorker, you can let Gov. Hochul know just how imperative it is that your most influential state court return to a directive of equal justice for all. [Sign and send the petition to Gov.
